Mudflaps

I'd have to agree that the mud flaps will be the problem. Maybe rivets on some flat medal to mud flaps, use auto double sided tape then once the mud flaps are stuck on go over the sides and top of the mud flap/fender with silicone adhesive to help hold the mud flaps on which would seal the tape from the elements. The running board not only are held on with bolts, double sided tape, they also use silicone to seal all along the top of here the running boards are attached to the rear fender and body. A good silicone adhesive alone is pretty strong.
Maybe drill a few more holes in the mud flaps and force the adhesive through the holes then attach them to the fenders?
Butch

The tape that I'm looking at is 3M™ Automotive Acrylic Plus Attachment Tape. It's made to withstand all the elements, but still have to check on whether or not it sticks to the rubber. If not, then I'll attach something to the rubber mud flap that it will stick to. There's a pretty interesting video on the adhesive they use and how elastic it is and still keeps the bond. Figure this is a good thing since the mud flaps will be moving around while riding. Had already planned on using caulk along the edges, but the silicone adhesive should be a better idea. I REALLY not want to drill through the fender or have the bolts show, so I'm hopeful this works.

I never thought of the automotive type tape. I've always bought mine at a hardware store. Years ago 3M had a great indoor/outdoor tape rated at 10 lbs. All I can find now is 5 lbs rating and a lot of 2 lb. tape. When you think of all the stuff on cars - that tape must be way better then the stuff at hardware stores.
I suppose auto parts stores might have that tape or where else would you buy it?

The place I'm getting it at is an automotive aftermarket distributor that also sells to the public. I asked them if the tape they sell is the same as what you can buy at the local hardware store and she laughed. Said it was a much better product. As far as the strength, this is what I could find:

Breakaway and Continuing Peel
• 72 hrs. at 22°C (72°F) Breakaway Peel 9.5 kg (21 lbs.)
• Continuing Peel 5.0 kg (11 lbs.)

It might be available in an auto parts store, not sure. The only problem I see with this is that it's only available in 5, 10 or 20 yard rolls. Kind of a waste since I only need about 2 feet.

Hey GoSlo I installed my mudflaps with the heavy duty 3m tape 2yrs ago and they are still hanging on. I didn't want to drill hoes in my fenders and take a chance of spider cracks down the road. You have to use denatured alcohol to wipe everything down first even the mudflap. Put the tape on and press down completely on the entire surface. Let it sit for awhile before you drive it. Make sure its warm before you put it on. Jim

You can replace just about ever bolt, nut , washer and hardware through Ace Hardware at a fraction of the cost that you would pay a dealer. They even carry (Metric and Standard) Bolt covers, Allen head, Torx Head in stainless steel, chrome and black chrome. Two side adhiesvise just can't hold up to the heat and fall off, Especially here in Oklahoma. Good luck on your project...

If anyone wants to look at my bike with the mud flaps on look at my album. you can get that 3m tape at any auto parts store. I can't stress enough to make sure everything is cleaned good or it won't stay, even the mud flaps. If you want you could rough up the rubber. Mine has been through heat, rain, snow, everything and they haven't come off after 2yrs of hard riding. I must be the only one without the bolts to hold them on cause I've never seen any other trike without the bolts to hold the flaps on. It's alot cleaner look. Good luck everybody. Jim

Glad to read about the success you've had keeping the mud flaps on without drilling holes. Hopefully I can have the same luck and there will be two of us riding around. With no bolts!

Thanks to everyone for their input on this topic.

Hey GoSlo,where is centennial. My one son is in Arvada. In Denver. I'm always riding to Co. It's so pretty. I've been almost everywhere there. We rode out to see my son last July for 3 days. Jim

Centennial is on the south side of Denver. Arvada is on the northern side. Still pretty close though. Let me know next time you're out this way and we can show you some pretty nice rides.

Picked up the tape from the automotive distributor and they said it will stick to the rubber mud flaps if I rough it up first and make sure everything is really clean. Just have to wait for some warm weather to put them on. Supposed to be at least 70°, and that ain't gonna happen anytime soon. Snowed last night and more on the way tomorrow.

I just can't believe the nice weather you get out there. It's not fair. I could take that all day. It's cold as hell here and snowing. I've tryed to get my wife to move out there but she just tells me if you want to go, go.I'd love to if I had a place to stay. My kid wouldn't want me to stay with him. I've been keeping an eye on your weather and it's been in the 50s and 60s. Thats just not right. The only good thing about snow here is I get to plow and make some money. Enjoy the weather and hope you get the flaps on ok. Jim

Shhh, don't tell everyone that. It's our little secret out here. Everyone looks at the weather maps and they always show snow and cold. In the mountains, yes. Here in town, not so much. Don't get me wrong, it does snow and we get plenty of cold days. Oh, by the way, it's 60 here today!!
