VW Trike Brakes Issue

On a Volkswagen trike, should the rear brakes stop it without smashing them as hard as I can? They are drum brakes. This is my first time on it.

Sounds like you have made the decision to take it to a shop to get it checked out. Sometimes that's just the best option.
