has anyone riden, or driven for that matter, the 24 heading south west from interstate 70. then taking a right into 12 just before Torrey which weaves its way through to the highway 89 south of Panguitch. and turning south. we are looking at this route through to Zion from Colorado..

Yes, that is a great route. I have not been on 24 north of Hanksville, (we took 95 south to Lake Powell) but the rest of that route is very scenic. Watch the gas guage and allow lots of stopping time for pictures and you will be ok, it's not that far as I remember it.

Jeff the ride from I70 down to Hanksville is just a way to get into the good riding! From Hanksville south and west is SPECTACULAR! I rode this route a couple years ago. Take your time and enjoy the scenery.:xszpv::xszpv:

SR 24 is sooooooooo much more then a way to get to Hanksville. The valleys are long rolling and lush and it is easy to imagine that not much has changed in 150 years. When you get to the junction with SR 25 take that up over Fish Lake a foretaste of whats coming. At the end go right on SR 72 to Fremont and Loa where you pick up 24 again. Plan on stopping on Bicknel for Pickle Pie. It is great. Torry is a good place to stop for the night if you have too. Do not leave Torry without a full tank. Now you are prepared for SR12. As you go south the road begins to climb until from red rock to thick pine and even aspen. There is a state park in Boulder,I forget which Indian culture but it is quite interesting. No services in Boulder. After boulder road really climbs lots of switchbacks and wonderful vistas but remember to watch the road. There is a great look out point at the top and on a good day you can almost see to Mexico. Next ride along the Hog's Back and as you start down you will come to Calf Creek Falls If it is open and you have time take the 2.5 mile trail back to the falls,150 ft high spectacular. There is fuel in Escalante Henrie and Tropic. Just after Tropic you will enter into a great little canyon that is a wonderful preview of Bryce. Great lunch at Ruby's Inn but very crowded. Hope you planned time to ride Bryce. You can park right next to some of the overlooks. Now we have a decision to make. Why do you want to go to Panguitch? Are you going north there or South. If north I would go right across the street from the Bryce road and head up to Widtsoe ,Osiris, and Otter Creek. There take 62 west to Junction and US 89 for the trip north.Be on the look out for the old grist mill in Osiris. In Junction look for the old county courthouse now a B&B on the west side of the road and beautiful abandoned gas station on the east.

If you are going south out of Panguitch I assume you are going up over SR 143 to Cedar Breaks. Great road you will love it. If you need food in Panguitch Try the Cowboy Smokehouse 95 N Main best place in Panguitch.

If you can give me a couple of days notice when you will be in the area and what your plans are I will try and join for a day or so.

So I just noticed that you are going fron Zion's to Colorado. In that case at Mt Carmel Junction go North on US 89 to SR12 then follow it to Torry.Same great trip just reverse of what I said. At Torry go east on 24 to I 70. Fuel in Green River but go into town to do it it is much cheaper.Silver Eagle usually has the best price and it is good fuel.If it's lunch time Rays Tavern has some of the best burgers and steaks in the West. People come from all over to eat there. If you take a detour thru Moab take SR 128 at the Colorado River bridge and follow it back to I 70. I see you are coming from Australia so I hope you really enjoy your stay here and get to see everything you hope to.

THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES.... We absolutely appreciate the time and effort the American trike community has given freely to us ( and not just in this post)
As Aussies, our time and opportunity to feed our American wonderlust is limited, so maximising the experience with pre planning is important.
Its still a year off, but as we all know , the years seem to get quicker and quicker.
It will be awesome to meet more of you this time if possible, and to catch up with "Keystone" and my brother from another Mother, "HD Russ."
no doubt we will have questions about other areas as we work out more details of the intended route. we have a rough idea of where we are heading and some of the places we want to see this time. i will try to make a marked up map soon,
cheers all
