Wife and I will be riding from San Fracisco to Portland Or. At the end of the month. We will be on Hwy.5 to Yreka Ca. I would appreciate any info on interesting secondary roads between Yreka and Portland. We have two days to make the trip from Yreka to Portland (300 miles). We'd like to stay off the interstate if possible. Any advice as to sites or places to stay also appreciated. Thanks.......Alan

I've come south on I-5 from Portland to Mt. Shasta before turning east. Pretty scenic for an interstate. Can't help with any side roads, though.

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but you might want to catch 97 north off the 5 in Weed, CA. That takes you right by Mt Shasta and into Klamath Falls.

Alternatively, continue on 5 to Medford and pick up 62 over to Crater Lake, then continue out of the park to 138 east and then over to 97 north.

Once you get on 97, you can continue northbound. It runs approximately parallel to Interstate 5, but 50-75 miles east of it. You can continue on 97 all the way to the Columbia River, then hit 84 west through the Dalles and Hood River and on into Portland. Or, you can pick up 20 from 97 just north of Bend, then continue 126 to 22 through the mountains until you return to 5 in Salem.

I've ridden some of those routes through central Oregon and Washington and they're very nice, but for me personally, I'd rather blow off the 5 altogether and take Highway 1/101 on the coast all the way north, then cut over to Portland on the 6 at Tillamook.

I recommend you use your Google map function and do some route planning, as it is difficult for me and others to know what you're looking for. I don't think you'll be disappointed, in any case...it's a beautiful area.
