I bought a vtx 1300 motor trike for my wife. When we went to look at it I noticed the right side axel seal was leaking so the guy knocked off a little for the seal. Today I tore into the rear end to change the seal and when I pulled the axle out one of the spider gears fell out and the thurst washer was half chewed away, so I pulled the other gear and it was chewed up also. I went to auto parts store You have to buy the compete spider gear seat hundred and fifty five bucks:(

I had a similar issue with my trike also bought used.
It looked like it had a black crinkle finish on the pumpkin when you looked at it from underneath.
Turned out to be a mixture of oil and dirt.
Both Seals in the CV joints were shot.
Not a fun fix on a new to me ride.
