I keep seeing people talk about raking the trike - can you explain the difference between that and pull-back risers, or is there a difference?

Cheri:
The rake is referring to the angle between the front forks and the frame. When you hear of someone raking the front end they are generally changing out the triple-tree (the part that holds the forks) to increase the angle. In reference to a trike it helps the ease of handling, kind of like power steering for bikes. Pull back risers just change to angle of the handle bars.

Hi Cheri,
The mechanics among us can give a much more detailed explanation, but here goes:

Pull backs simply lift and move the position of the handlebars, and are usually used for those like me who are small to make our arm position more relaxed and comfortable.

Raking the front end actually repositions the front forks so they are less "straight up and down" than normal. This actually makes turns easier, giving the effect of power steering to the rider. It sure made steering mine easier! I love having mine raked!

I have the Champion EZ Steer, which I believe raked the forks about 4-1/2 degrees.

Thanks all! Kinda what I thought it meant, but wanted to be sure. I had pull back risers put on last year which did help with the steering a bit, but I don't think they raked the front end. Just wondering if that was done factory (Suzuki/Lehman conversion deal), or if I should look into it when money permits. Guess I'll be calling my dealer today with more questions! :)

It is highly unlikely that they raked the front end at the installation unless they asked you for your permission! It is an extra charge and not a standard part of the trike package. By all means ask them though! As a petite woman, I can tell you that the steering would be dramatically easier for you with the rake, so it is something I would encourage you to save up for!!!!
