Taller windshield

I have the 2014 TG and I do not like the short windshield. It may work great with the redesigned fairing, but I'm old school and believe a taller windshield gives better protection. I'm thinking on getting a taller one (about eye level like the stock ones on all my past bikes) so I can duck down in the rain and look over it at night etc.
Has anyone installed a taller windshield and how do you like it? Any difference?
I know some riders like real short windshields because it looks cool. I don't want cool, I want protection. What are some of your thoughts.

Gary,I had a Clark windshield on my 11 triglide.I really liked it for the oversize it was. They are wider then most.I contacted them about shields for the 14's & they are now making them.As soon as i get my 14,i'll be able to take a measurement & get one ordered.Clarks Custom Windshields.

I am the same way I like to look thru and not over my windshield. Plus the protection as you know lots of stuff flying around on the roads.
I went with the LRS and has the curve on top to push the air up and over.

I have a Clarks Custom Shield on my 2011 Tri Glide. I look thru and it works great for me. No head buffeting at all. I have the 12''Half Moon wide w/light smoke tint.ThumbUp

I have the National V-Stream and before I go buying a new wind screen, I'm trying the Sange edging. I think that will go a long way for rain protection, if I get wind management, then that will be a plus.

I installed a 14 inch windshield replacing the stock 12 inch on my 2010 TG. The part number is 58314-97 from HD. I have the 12 inch if you are interested in buying it. Let me know.

Thanks.....Mark

I am not where I can measure mine right now but I was thinking it is 10 inch not a 12 inch on the 2014. I was wanting to try the 12 inch curved one.

I have 3 windshields for my TG.

A short recurve from LRS for summer...when it's hot I don't mind getting a bit of rain on me.

A tall recurve from LRS for cold weather.

The stock windshield that came on the 2011. It is a compromise windshield when we know were going to have both warm and cool weather. Like on the trip we made last summer up to Alaska.

The way i was told to measure if wanting to see over the shield was to sit in the seat the way you normaly ride & put a level between the tip of your nose to the windshield & level it,then measure the height. It's worked for me.

Don't forget the slouch factor. After a while in the saddle I find I get more relaxed and get more comfortable thereby lowering the height that my eyes were at.

Also, I always thought that the rule of thumb with a recurve windshield was that the curve was equal to about a 2 inches (i.e. if you had a 12 inch shield you could use a 10 inch recurve and have the same airflow effect).

Go to Clearviewshields.com and contact them. They will ask your height, inseam size and riding position style and will then recommend a shield for you. I have had these on my last two Harleys plus my new 14 trike. They have the recurve at the top which helps keep the passenger from being buffeted. They are twice as thick has the stock windshield so the top edge of the windshield does not vibrate at highway speeds. I will not buy any other shield than Clearview!

I bought a taller windshield for my Ultra from JC Whtiney. Twice as thick and half the price. Harley stuff is so overpriced and the quality isn't always so good. You can check out their catalog online.

Guess I might not make a comment about the 6 1/2" Klock Werks windshield I run. I hate tall windshields. AND as somebody mentioned I've always been told you should be looking about 2" above the windshield when in your normal riding or slouched position. Was also told 'never' ride looking thru the windshield.

But hey, what ever you're comfortable with.

As I stated, I'm looking through an F4+4 tinted. Just like looking through the windshield of my cage. Don't know why you were told 'never' look through. But, you're correct, it's your choice.

Of course, different strokes for different folks. Some ride with the 'see through', some like to 'look over'. Both options have specific advantages.

I like my eyes about 1" over the shield in normal riding - that way I can scrunch down when it rains. Plus I have the Road Zepplin seat so I can adjust it so I can be a couple inches above or below the top of the shield.

No one ever told me to "never" ride looking through the shield. I mean if your out riding and it starts to rain or even hail what are you going to do - ride with you head sticking above the windshield?? I think not.

:)

i rode for 50+ years and my only windshield was a bandana, no windshield to look over, thru or around. First windshield was on a 2002 Ultra. So riding in rain, hail, whatever was a given.
