My daughter is wanting a tablet for Christmas and I know nothing about them. She is 23, a little rough on things. She is going back to school for a year and working full time. I heard if she gets one with windows in it, she can transfer school work and other files back and forth from her laptop. Any help or advice will be appreciated.

This is the general forum so anything goes, we call it "our daily thread". I dont know much about tablets but hopefully someone will come along who does.

Not sure how much help this will be - I'm certainly no expert!

I have the Samsung Galaxy, 7" tablet. No usb slot, just the memory card, so she'd need to transfer files via cable or the card.

Haven't used it for much other than an ereader & some websurfing so far. GREAT for reading, ok for websurfing (Facebook adjusts to the size, but not all websites do yet). Love that I can shrink most sites though, so surfing isn't too bad. I have opened an Excel spreadsheet on it - I wouldn't want to do it for any heavy use, but for a quick look it was alright. And it's AWESOME for photos & video - taking & viewing!!! During our recent power outage, I used my 3G data plan (Verizon) and watched NetFlix tv shows - small, but excellent playback!!

For school work, you'd be better off with a 10" tablet - Samsung makes one now, and I believe the iPad is 10" as well (Juju could tell you - she has one). There are also a couple of others - you could try searching cNet - it's a great site for reviews of just about anything electronic or computing!

go to apple.com . they have some real good deals on REFURBISHED IPADS !!!! just like new. same warranty as new . these are what the rest of the competition are trying to copy. she,ll really like it

I use the 7" Samsung tablet heavily. I carry it daily, so the smaller size suits me better than the larger 10". I think when I bought this one it was retailing around 300 + but I went to verizons wireless site online and got it for $69.00. They have a program where if you buy a phone or tablet and return it within 14 days they refurbish it and warrant it for a year and the prices are crazy cheap.

As mentioned earlier, C-net is a good source for reviews etc.

Good Luck

Check out the Vizio Tablet 8" High resolution tablet with wi-fi. under 200.00 at costco and sams. has lots of bell and whistles, just received one yesterday. really have not used it yet but the recommendation come from a friend who loves computer stuff. he has a I-pad not crazy about, bought the Vizio for his wife. She love it, has usb and some other plug in port, can expand memory with micro sd card. plus lifetime US based tech staff. Check it out

Amazon is running a pre-black friday sale right now, check it out, also check out Tech4less.com. You can pick up electronics for really good prices if you know the specs on what you want.

Really depends on price range and/or what she will need to use it for -- IPad is the top of the line in my opinion and has an excellent camera, GPS, and more features others don't, but for most ordinary daily features you might consider the Kindle Fire which is on sale on Amazon for $199 about half the price of an IPad and is very good for downloading textbooks, music, video, basically anything available or previously purchased through Amazon.

I have a Motorola Xoom and would 'not' recommend it at all.

It has a huge amount of typing lag, the SD card is 'read only', the USB port is not usable for stuff like external hard drives and etc., and the browser will crash on many sites.

IMHO ... the momentum behind the iPad is just too much to ignore, and although I will keep my Xoom (it's great 10.1" Netflix HiDef 16:9 player) my next "soon-to-be-purchased" tab will be an iPad.

I have the IPad2 and have no regrets about buying it. It has replaced my netbook while traveling. There are a lot less expensive tablets on the market, so I guess it just boils down as to what you are going to use it for.
