So, my fellow Vulcan rider buddy, Lanny, and I are planning to go to Sturgis this year. Who's been? Any suggestions? Heartaches? Headaches? Do's and Don'ts?
Been going every year for years. Everything from the mild to the wild. Depends on what you want. Stay at Crooked Creek resort in Hill City. Like quite at night. Also it's cooler in the hills at night!
Ride. There are plenty of awesome routes to ride. Every gas station will have rally maps. Follow the routes and you'll see everything. Do the Wild Life loop more than one day.
Iron Mountain is a great ride. Best way to do it is actually go down Needles Highway (SD 87) north to south and then go over on US16A and do Iron Mountain (also US16A) south to north toward Keystone. As you go thru the tunnels you will see Mt. Rushmore straight ahead. By the way, the 360 turns are called "Pigtails". Another nice road is SD244 from Keystone over to US385 (or visa versa). Your on the back side of the Needles and go on the south side of Mt. Rushmore. Very scenic.
Our local HOG chapter does a "Needles Run" every Father's Day weekend. The group leaves on a Friday and makes the 440 mile trip there, spends Saturday doing small group rides and then return on Sunday. A small group of us leaves a day or two earlier and catch some of the other sites like the South Dakota Badlands, Wall and this year we are stopping in Murdo to see the car, motorcycle, tractor museum there. They have about 275 cars, 75 motorcycles and 70 tractors.
If you're coming from the east, be fore warned the Corn Palace just selling cheap junk from China.
Ma and I had a blast feeding the Prairie Dogs miniature Ritz crackers. They'd take a little time to work up the courage to come up to you but eventually take them right out of your hand. I think that was in Custer state park.
