Scheduled Services

My New 2 Me '11 Tri-Glide is due for a 30K service. Can someone tell me what is involved in the service? The TG is still under the extended warranty, which the prior owner transferred to me, so I need to have the service done. How much should I expect it to cost at the local HD dealer?

And on a related note, I have heard something about buying multiple service packages, to pay upfront for 3-5 services, at a reduced rate. Anyone know about these?

30k service should be Change Engine Oil and Filter, Primary Oil, Transmission Oil, Spark Plugs, Clean or replace Air Filter, Adjust Critical Fastners, Chk all lights, Chk and adjust drive belt, Chk and adjust clutch, lube clutch cable, Chk all cables, Change Brake Fluid, Change front fork oil and adjust front steering knuckle, chk tire wear or replace tires, anywhere from $300 to $500 at a dealer (extra if tires needed).

Extended Warranty does not cover Service intervals on the bike..

Or buy a manual and do it yourself!

Well, maybe I "drank the cool-aid", but I went up to the local dealer and bought a service package. $1250 for the next 5 services, so $250 each. Makes sense to me.

Also, dealer said that H-D has contacted them and recommended they see/service the TG every 3K rather than every 5K. Has anyone else been told this?

look in the back of your owners manual. it has the schedule etc .also buy the parts manual, service manual, tri-glide supplement manual, and the electronic diagnostic manual. some say the dealers won't sell you the parts manual. don't know about the others but they were availabe for the '09 t/g. also if you are going to do your own fluid (oil) changes. go on line & buy a 1/4" click torque wrench. also swap out the torex screws with allen head bolts. ACE hardware has them 5?*" in length for the derby cover.
i just bought a SET on=line & let the mechanic swap thep out as he did the compensator insp. cut -off a metric allen wrench & glue it in a 1/4" drive socket. for your own use.
go over the bike & do the same for the other sizes. also when you have time
grease the neck bearing. turm h-bars full right & the zerk fitting is about 2" down from top. then after 2 or 3 riders later do a kleenex clean-up on the grease.
swap out the air temp gage for a oil=pressure gage, amd the voltage gage for a digital one. and when you have the servece done have the mech show oyu how to disconnect the various elecrtrical connections , so you can put a bab of di-electrical grease in all of them, fuses too. replace the handle bars with 10" paul yippes BAGGER bars (not apes)
had to fo 4" over with the clutch cable&125.00 dealer ordered, you need a 12 or 15" TBR extension cable $30.00 dealer had on wall . this really relieved the fwd back huckh you get with stock bars.

Some dealers have those service packages, some don't. Mine doesn't. I know because I heard the same thing and asked them. As far as HD saying to dealer to do service every 3k miles. Sounds like dealer was delusional at the time and imagining raking in even more money.

If you look at most of the items on the service list, these are things you can do yourself and save a lot of money. Most folks can "inspect" tires, check for leaks and most items like that. Services are an expensive item for Harleys. Look at the list, decide what you can do yourself and have your dealer do the items you can't. They might fuss with you about it, but why pay hundreds of dollars for something most folks can do for themselves

:Agree: Sounds like the dealer is fishing for dollars which they often do. I once had a service writer try and convince me I should be having my oil changed every 2,500 miles, I walked away shaking my head. The majority of the time when HD recomends a change from the norm they put it in a bulletin, I haven't seen or heard of a bulletin suggesting the trike be serviced every 3,000 miles.

If you have a proper fitting torxs bit you shouldn't have any problems, I've never stripped one but then I use torxs bits from Mac Tools which fit snug. The derby bolts on my 06 Ultra have been on there since day one and have been removed quite a bit, last year I had the derby off a good 5 or 6 times messing with the clutch.

Now one thing I do is I don't use thread locker on the derby bolts, I use never seez and torque them to 100in/lbs and have never had one come loose yet.

Just a word to the wise,,,,,,,, If you do your own work,,,,, KEEP ACCURATE RECORDS !!! Document all work done, and everything should match with mileage records. Something that will stand up in court should the need arise ! Keep all oil & filter purchases, & charge them out to the service on the Bike. An accurate diary will stand in court !
