oil change

I have a recently purchased 2005 Ultra Classic/Lehman conversion. I have had the oil changed once and did not notice what all the guy did. I do know he changed it cold, won't do that again. I am going to do my own oil changes from now on. I have an oil temp gage and an oil cooler to add and will change the oil out then. 1. What do you make-use to keep from spilling oil everywhere when you remove the filter? 2. I saw the guy put a screwdriver into the filter to open the check valve so he could pour some oil into it to avoid a dry start, anybody know how to do this? 3. I have not been to determined where the oil level should be on the dipstick as you are supposed to check it on the kickstand. One guy told me it should be between the "F" and "U" of the Full on the dipstick (when hot). I also read somewhere that you should put 3.5 Qt in with a filter change and top it off after you run it to get to normal temp, is this correct? With a completely non related question do you take Fix-A-Flat with you when you are riding? Thanks to all for your help, be safe.

Was it a idiot dealer or indy that drained oil cold? Don't ever go back to this guy.

I pour some oil into the filter before installing in. There are many ways to contain the oil. In the old days I used aluminum foil(sometimes still do), you can make one out of a plastic liter bottle, you can buy one from the dealer or just let it drip then spray with break cleaner and hose off.

Switch to a stock dipstick for a Tri Glide or an LED unit for TG

I do the 3.5 quarts proceedure.

I've been carrying the Stop n Go tire repair kit for over 30 years. It hooks up to the spark plug hole to inflate the repired tire so you don't have to carry an air pump or a lot of CO2 bottles.

If your worried about dry starts you can remove the plugs and crank the engine over until the oil pressure gauge reads a few pounds of pressure. Might take a minute or so.

First of all, a dipstick from aTriGlide will not work on a 2005 Ultra motor. Just drain the oil when hot, install new filter, pour in 3.5 Quarts oil and start engine. Now, the next morning when cold pull dipstick and note where it's at. Thats your benchmark.
