Let me preface this by saying: I'm an NRA supporter 100%, but my views on gun ownership age don't align with NRA positions 100%.

There's no way any civilian kid at age 18 should be buying or possessing AR type weapons. There's a reason handgun purchases and alcohol purchases are limited to folks 21 and older.

When I was 18, I thought I knew everything, like most kids did at that age. If someone told me I was too young to buy a gun, I'd have told that person to go pound sand. Unfortunately at age 18, most kids are not fully developed mentally to have and use gunpowder powered weapons responsibly. There are exceptions, but they are few and far between.

The other argument is at age 18 kids can join the military & fire weapons. While this is true, they are under close supervision & command. A youngster 18 years old in our military is no longer a child, after boot camp training.

We're not solving the nations guns in schools problem on a trike forum, but "talking" about it leads to ideas that could spread far, and potentially reach those who can make a difference in Washington.

No buying of guns, long or hand, for anyone under 21.... :clapping::clapping:

What say you?

My Sons and now my Grandkids were and are more than capable to handle firearms, At a much younger age than 18....

That Said, Every parent isn't capable of supervising young children on the respect and responsibility of gun ownership .........

Tough call on the age thing....

Pete, as a retired military serviceman, I have to say just one thing about your post. Just because an 18 year old goes through basic training and weapons training doesn't mean he is no longer a kid. Trust me, some of these young men don't grow up until they are in there mid twenties or so. I know this from many years of supervising them.

This is a tough call and there is no simple answer. One problem is the left as well as the mainstream media harping on how guns kill.... We all know that guns don't kill, people kill.

I think there are items and weapons out there that we could do without but just because a few folks don't like them, no reason to take them from everyone. Someone hell bent on hurting others will do it regardless of any law on the books, if not with a gun, the will use knifes, explosives or vehicles.

My vote would be to do away with gun free zones...eliminate soft targets as these seem to be the #1 target of these cowards.

Just another view...

I don't want a 85yr old ex-military, ex LEO or my grandma, who might be half-blind or semi-senile blowing away the UPS driver because he/she thought someone was breaking in their house, just because he was knocking too hard at the front door.

Age shouldn't be the only delimiter.

Actually would like to see this go to the jungle. This type of gun bull**** pisses me off every time I see it. I'm tired of it. Its a problem of society not gun ownership.

There is and won’t be a 100% fix. The military will issue and educate you how to use your weapons. After your tour your state of mind will change . Run ins with the MP’s , hate the police , run ins with ISIS , hate the Muslims, ect. Mental state of mind will not show up on a background check, nor will age make a difference. The gray matter between your ears should determine if one is capable or not to posess a fire arm.

If a child has interest in firearms, it’s up to the parent to guide them/introduce them in a way that they don’t experiment in there own way. “Queriosity killed the cat”

So will 21yrs be the answer? Hell, I know 30 yr olds that Scare me!

no firearms until 21

i don;t think 21 is the answer.i have owned guns my whole life.alot has to do is the way you was raised up.i was taught hunting at young age, hunted for food to eat.we carried guns to school, took them to shop class ,redid stocks, blued them, and went hunting after school.alot is the way kids are raised, the new video games, internet.DRUGS are the bigge,.they put on facebook, and other web sites what they are going to do.red flags.i don;t understand why kids want to go to school or public places and kill others. Mental health, single parents working 2 jobs,.old days a good trip to wood shed did wonders.now don;t touch, the lawyers will get you.there is a big problem . more laws,we have enough now if they would enforce them.i think armed vets at schools would help. my 2 cents

I’ll add another 2 and make it 4

Every school has a LEO. They walk the hallways. Some poor ain’t got a clue person operates the front door. The LEO should operate the door !

Others have solved (or at least reduced this problem).ThumbUp

Myth out...Drops mic.

Today's news is Trump is for raising the gun buying age for all types of guns to 21. = Hope he does that without haste.

Doesn't mean a 9 year old under supervision cannot handle, hunt, or target practice, only that they cannot purchase a firearm.

What is wrong with that logic?

Good God.

Taking Guns Away From Law Abiding Citizens Does Not Stop Non-Law Abiding Citizens.

Lemme just repeat that.

Taking Guns Away From Law Abiding Citizens Does Not Stop Non-Law Abiding Citizens.

One more time.

Taking Guns Away From Law Abiding Citizens Does Not Stop Non-Law Abiding Citizens.

If some lowlife little piece of excrement wants to be a scum, he's going to be a scum. He'll steal the neighbor's gun, or mommy's gun, or daddy's gun, or grandpa's gun... you get the idea.

Or he'll get a machete, or a shovel, or a friggin gas can.

MAKING LAWS THAT RESTRICT PEOPLE WHO FOLLOW LAWS ISN'T GOING TO STOP THOSE WHO DON'T FOLLOW LAWS.

This ain't difficult to understand, folks...

I think the left is so scared of firearms that they turn their heads away from anything to do with them. Instead of burying their heads in the sand, they should be teaching gun safety at an early age to every kid, male or female and it wouldn't be a bad idea to include the parents as well, even if the age to purchase is changed to 21. As part of the training, take them to see the affects of what a firearm can do to someone.

In Ct we had death by the electric chair and one day, my dad took me to a display at a shopping plaza and I'll tell you, that chair was something I would never want to see in action. Seeing someones face blown away or other damage will reinforce the training. Obviously, that part has to be done with a certain age group but adding in a short gun safety lesson every year in school would keep it fresh. Schools had rifle teams years ago so the students had the opportunity to use the guns as well, taking away that "curiosity factor" that always seems to lead to problems when not supervised. In scouts I always had the opportunity to shoot during summer camps and my dad hunted so I had that opportunity to be around guns at an early age.

In Ct it was always 18 for long rifles but with handguns you had to be 21, even for ammo. I had an antique rifle that belonged to my great grandfather and because the ammo was also used in a hand gun, my mother had to sign for it before I turned 21.

no firearms until 21

raising age limit is not going to stop sickos.they will steal, trade drugs, rob,.if you remember you don;t need a gun to kill.look what mcveigh did in okc with fertilizer.,jim jones with koolaid, muslum with bombs attached to themselves.airplanes on 9-11.i still think we need some guards/metal detectors in schools.there is plenty of unemployed vets needing jobs.says pd was notified 39 times of shooter???? why was nothing done till its too late.we have the laws ,lets enforce them.everyone wants to point a figure or make new laws up. put security people in schools, even if they can stop 1 shooter its a start.

Frank, we didn't even hear about that in the national news... they are all too busy with their anti-gun agenda.

^...Wow, crazy story, Ron.

The deputy got cold feet when a potential life or death encounter was avoided due to, hopefully not: his cowardice under fire.

Sheriff did the right thing in pulling him from duty. That's not what the deputy was supposed to be getting paid for...

Texas tried that. It was a disaster and quickly raised the age back to 21. too many kids showing up to school plastered plus buying booze for their friends under 18.
