New posts listings

I prefer the old way of listing new posts. I don't read every post, but I read the ones that I have a particular interest in. When a new post was read, I would go back to the new posts list and go down to where the title was not bolded and pick up where I left off. Now I have to go back and re-read every title because they are all bolded and the read post is removed from the list. Sometimes, I would go back and re-read the new post if I think I may want to comment on it. Now that new post is gone and I have missed my opportunity. What am I doing wrong? Uggh. I'm too old to change.

Same there' the new post is one of the better features. Why its gone is a mystery to me:mad:.. Some times Computer Geeks tend to add or subtract features just because they can...

Not understanding that some people like things just the way they were...Change is not always a good thing...:gah:And more times than not confusing...:gah::gah:

Thank you.....:Angel::Coffee:

No problem...I live by that feature. Its a must have! :)

We are installing and testing a lot of brand new custom, one-off features, the good ones we will keep and the others we wont. Those which have benefits but not liked by all can be made to be turned on or off, individually by a member.

Be patient with Mark while he is setting up the new features. This is all custom code and is a very time consuming and highly technical process and nothing is permanent if we dont like it.

I can assure you I did not change the "Thread/Forum Read Marking Type" from being activity based (using cookies) to "Database (automatic forum marking)" simply "because I can." I changed it because it is considered by the vast majority in the vB community to be by far the most usable of the 3 options and many custom products will rely on that method being used.

When I am reading new posts, I actually want those threads whose posts I have read to be removed from the "New Posts" search because at that point they are no longer new. I have been involved with quite a few forums and without exception this is what everyone has preferred, however I don't want to impose something on a community that isn't wanted, so I have put it back the way it was and deleted the new features that rely on being able to actually tell when a user had read a thread or not.

Mark, sending a message to you in the admin message box regarding the New Posts feature.

Mark is right in that some of the older scripts simply will not function properly with the newer systems and to be sure he isn't making changes just because he can. Just the act of reloading our OS and making the mandatory required software updates after our server crashed set us up for some compatibility issues and Mark to his credit has worked tirelessly to help us secure and improve the site. The site went down because we were hacked. We were hacked because there were vulnerabilities in our systems that hackers had discovered in the old software which allowed them in. Security, compatibility and functionality are an ongoing issue because we are constantly being attacked.

Us old dogs are a bit hard to learn new tricks...LOL! Maybe we need to better understand how the new system works and what are the advantages. I know that personally I have gotten used to the old system and liked the ease of use, but I can see your point. I did notice that there is a new "Today's Posts" link in the quick links section.

Does that work in a similar way to "New Posts"?

The "Today's Posts" link isn't new (or at least I didn't add it), but it will show you all threads that have had a post made to them within the last 24 hours.

Thank you for all your hard work Mark. Folks have no idea how much time and brain power you are investing every day to make our community the best forum on the www. Y'all should all really be grateful we have someone of Mark's skillset and abilities as our Tech Admin. I can tell you with no exaggeration that he is a rock star in the vB tech support forums and many would kill to have him on staff.

I'm happy to help out, and I truly don't want to make any changes at all that don't fit with the community. I can relate to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude, and I promise you I wouldn't change anything unless there is some reason behind it.

From here on out, I will be more careful to consult Randy before changing anything and to lay out the pros and cons, because this is his site that he has carefully grown over the years, and he has a good feel for the wants/desires of the community. He is obviously doing something right, because this is an active and thriving community, and I really don't want to impede that. It's becoming less and less common to see a thriving forum these days.

I do apologize for the inconvenience this recent change caused. :D

Ok apparently I need to experiment more with features that are here. That being said my hats off to you and everyone that keeps the hamster fed and trained in that box you call a server. You do a great job and Sometimes unenjoyable change is needed to make things work.I get it.No complaints here.I'm liking some of the flashier changes i'm seeing.

This is one of the issues with the cookie based thread marking system. The only fix I know of for it is to use the database auto-marking system.
