I live in Il. which is pretty much flat land. My 2011 with the 103eng, port/polished heads, true dulles w/Rinehart mufflers, Comander 5, H-D tuneup module and 255 cam is just ok.

Last year I put 3500 miles on completing a western trip and this year 7110 mile trip to the west coast. I'm very disappointed in the performance.

I'm thinking of upgrading to the H-D 120st, wil i be disappointed? Will the engine and drive train be reliable? How many have done this?
Thanks in advance, DJ

Hi, would it be better to list my question with a separate title or if a thread is already started how do I find and join in? Thanks DJ

welcome to tt 55il!!
your about 80 miles nw of me,,
I have 100 inch motor and after adding side car i lost a lot of performance the extra weight and wind resistance was some of it I think in my case with side car-heavy toe in causes big rolling resistance I think,,, anyway I too have considered a larger engine the hold-up for me is I don't tour ride much anymore and mine is fine for the occasional road trip and our normal 3-4 hour,,, 2 lane day trips... if we are on 4 lane 70 plus mph - its a dog and lucky to get 28mpg.. just the way it is if I had a lot of $$ I would be all over the 120 inch I would bet I could get as good or better mpg;)
again welcome and keep us posted with your thought on the 120!!

FuzzyWuz, Thanks for the feedback. The problem is the trike has no ump up long uphill straight-always out west. I'm constantly shifting from 5th to 4th until I get enough speed at the top of a hill then shift up to 6th. I can stand on the throttle and it just goes slower. But once I keep down shifting or up shifting all is ok. It just seems to me that H-D didn't do there home work with weight vs engine and torque/horse power. They put a 110 in a two wheeler that weighs ~500lbs less.

I will switch this thread to the address Clint sent me. Also, I would like to thank everyone on the nice welcome.... glad to be part of the group. DJ

Your right on torque loss as I'm not looking for top end or high speed 100mph plus, just want to get the machine up and moving without constantly shifting and have pulling power. I will look into inserts but I'm not sure if they fit in the exhaust tail pipe or my Rinehart mufflers?

What exhaust muffler would you recommend?

I never found a Dyno shop that can spin up a Trike?
Thanks DJ

Can't help with the HD stuff but, Welcome to Trike Talk, glad to have you on board. Ride safe and have fun.

Thanks, DJ

Welcome from Southeastern Illinois. Have a 2009 Triglide. Put Stage 1 air breather on, Fatshots, changed front sprockets and added Woods 555 cams and few other things to the bike. Had the bike tuned but not on the Dino.  Bike has plenty of low end torque and a lot of get up and go. Do not have to down shift on the long uphill roads anymore. Mostly ride two up. A few changes will help.

I ride solo and have no performance problems - normally. Last month I did a Route 66 and a Saddlesore 1000 trip to Calif. Did have a little issue going up those mountains(no issue with the eastern mountains).
I'm playing with the idea of going with (dealer recommendation) Cobra headers and Race Pro slip-ons and Stage I A/C and Race Tuner. Can't decide if I want to spend that kind of money or not. I have always been happy with stock bikes for the last 57 years. I don't need anything over 90 mph(which I can do with TG now)
and I can just about dust off any 4 wheel vehicle off the line now. That's why I
m on the fence on this.

About 1 1/2 hours north of you....Woodstock HD....They have TWO Trike dyno's. Ask for Mike. He can build ya anything . Honestly

Jc1300; Thanks, I will give them a call next week, in fact I'm heading that way and might stop by. This would give me a basic straight line of what is or is not working. Again, thanks for the info DJ

Honestly, they build great motors ~ That and they listen to your needs and build what you want to achieve. Not a lot of that out there. Let us know what ya end up doing - jc

Jc1300; Last Friday I contacted Woodstock HD and spoke to Eric (Mike was on vacation) and discussed my issues with my trike. As a motor man he said the Dyno would tell the story, then we could map out a better resolution. I told him it would be scheduled latter this year when everyone has put their bikes away for the winter then we could play.

Thanks for the information, when this process is completed I will start a new thread giving everyone information on the results. DJ
