I have a 2007 flhtc converted to a trike back in 2009. even though I live in Fl. I spend summers in Pa. and when I am in the mountains all I seem to be doing is downshifting especially when 2 up. I have been seeing posts about changing the tranny sprocket gear to 30 tooth instead of 32 and I have also seen posts about changing cams to give me more torque. I would like some serious advice on what you trikers really think is the best way to go even if it different than what I mentioned. I am not a speed freak and don't care about the speedo being slightly off as I rarely ride over 75mph. HELP

If you have a shop that you trust, you could ask them what they would recommend for your particular needs. Some mechanics have parts combinations which produce the torque and reliability needed for an application. I'm sure others will give you particulars...

Another possibility is a higher gear ratio in your differential. The trade off is your RPM's are going to be higher so your MPG's will suffer...

I dropped 2 teeth from the compensator sprocket on my 1997 Harley FLHTC with a DFT conversion. This was in part due to the larger diameter rear tires I installed. Since I often tow a trailer while 2-up, lower gearing made sense to me. My gearing is now roughly equivalent to the early EVO setup, rather than the later, higher ratio. It helps quite a bit on upgrades and greatly reduces the constant up and down shifting with the higher gearing. And I can still pull 60 mph easily in fourth gear climbing steeper grades if needed. At the same time, I converted to the late model automatic primary tensioner. It has enough range to make up for the 2-tooth reduction.

Just my experience.

I have a 2012 Tri Glide. I added the Fullsac Stage 1 kit on her. I now have no problems in our mountains. Can now go up to 7500 ft with no problem. Good luck!

If you could give us some more details such as what trike kit and is your engine still a 96. What area of PA do you ride, I might know the roads.

Go to Stage 1 or Stage 2, you will notice power. I did on my 07 Ultra! Less shifting etc especially when 2 Up. I hear changing sprocket will get rid of the annoying 5th gear whine???
