A popular choice of material, for your application, would be mechanical tubing in Grade 1026. Not trying to sound technical, but this tubing is a cold drawn resistance welded tube with all flash removed. The finish of this tube is excellent and will require little if any dressing in your final assembly.

The strength to weight ratio is at least twice that of standard black wall pipe and will assist in keeping your frame weight to an absolute minimum.

Visit a steel supply counter in your area and if they don't have it in stock, they can order whatever length you need for your project.

Good luck with your project!

In the land down under we use "drawn steem pipe" it sounds a little like what Eagle Man was discribing.
My engineer recomended to me when I built the Phantom and since then I have been told it's the most popular with the owner builders.
