Right now, Americans ages 62 and older can score a senior lifetime pass to national parks, monuments and other federal recreational lands for just $10. But according to AARP, the pass price is expected to jump to $80 — the same fee charged for a standard annual pass — later this year.

Although it’s unknown exactly when the fee hike will be implemented, the U.S. Department of the Interior says it does not expect changes to the senior pass price or program “within the next few months.”

I have an America The Beautiful, The National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Pass. I have used it the last two years and love it. Everywhere we go when traveling to National and most State Parks I've used it. If you can get one do it!

I went on a little ride today and I happened to think that I was only 30-40 minutes each way to one of the locations listed where this permit is available. I stepped up and told them what I needed........they were out! Said they run out Saturday but they have ordered more. Oh well, another excuse for a ride.

I would fully support senior citizens (65 and older) be given a free pass to all of our national parks. I mean, why not extend this privilege to the folks who have contributed taxes over a long life.

:GoodPost: Jim

Thanks for letting us know.ThumbUp

It looks like the total cost of the Lifetime pass is actually $20 which includes a $10 document processing fee.

I have a Lifetime Pass and being a Disabled Veteran there was No Charge for it. i was told any Vet with a 50 % or more rating can apply for it. Bring your DD-214 with you and your VA rating.

Have had mine for 14 years now and think it crazy for them to go up on it. Even if they do hike it to the $80.00, from what I've heard, it will still be only a 1 time fee. Where the $80.00 annual fee would be every year.

Noticed you used Mt. Rushmore in your posting. The park it's self if free, no Nat'L Park Pass. BUT you have to pay for parking. The parking garage is leased out to a concessionaire. Back several years ago they would let bikes in for 1/2 price, which at that time was $4.00. A few years back they started charging FULL price for bikes, $8.00. There was maybe 12 bikes in our group one afternoon rode down to watch the night lights. We all went up to the top level of the garage and parked 1 bike per space, where back in the day we'd park 3-4 bikes in each space. An attendant came running over said we needed to park more than 1 to a space. We told him you charge us full price to park so we figured that entitled us to our own space. He told us they'd run out of parking if everybody parked the way we parked. We told him to go down and talk to the man taking the money.

If you have a permenant disability you can also get them without charge for lifetime without being a veteran. You need a letter stating that it's a permenant disability from your doctor. I know that a P2A qualified in my case.

If you travel and stop at any National Parks it is worth every penny you paid for your card, for the sites you will see and the people you will meet.

The primary reason my tradition of having ice cream with George and the boys came to a halt. I can remember when that disaster of a garage did not exist. Much as I can remember the Jackpine Gypsies M/C running the rally before the city and state got greedy. One could actually sit outside Gunners with a carry out cup and not get busted. Now days it seems the baby strollers out number the bikers.

There is nothing on the national park site that indicates a price increase next year. By the way, "they" have been saying that for at least 14 yrs when I bought mine. I think you will find it depends on Congressional action with regard to funding for our parks. With Trump, who knows what will happen. But, I would consider the source. Would anyone believe much of what AARP says anyway.

A ranger in Pa said there is a price increase of $80 coming either 1 Oct or 1 Jan.

Got my pass about 4 years ago when the wife and I were riding thru Badlands National Park in South Dakota with another couple. I was in the lead as we entered and paid the park fee, the couple behind us were taking longer to go thru and I was wondering why. After they got thru they told us they purchased a lifetime pass at the gate. So when we got to the west exit of the park I pulled in behind the gate building and walked up to the window. They had me come around to the back and fill out a paper, show my ID to verify age and gave me the pass. My gate fee at the beginning was $10. and they just gave me the pass. The wife and I have used it several times in Yellowstone and Theodore Roosevelt National Park here in North Dakota.

I have a group of people going with me on our annual "Needles Run" to the Black Hills in June. We are going out the long way to Hardin, MT and then down to Deadwood, SD with a stop at Little Bighorn National Monument. I told the people going to make sure and get the National Park Lifetime Pass. A couple of those going on that ride are also going with me on the trip out to Meridian, ID for the Pacific Northwest HOG Rally in July. We will be doing the Beartooth Pass on the way out and thru Yellowstone so told them the pass will be a great bargain. We will also be stopping at Craters of the Moon National Monument near Arco, ID and they can use the pass there.

One of those going with us checked out the National Park website and found out it would be $20. to do it by mail but there is a location in Valley City, ND only 30 miles from here that actually sells them plus another place near Detroit Lakes, MN about 130 miles from here that also sells them. So he stopped in Detroit Lakes when he was over there about a month ago and purchased a pass. Not sure why he could purchase them at either of those spots as they are not national parks or monuments. They told him there that the passes would be going up to $80. sometime this fall and that the other annual passes would also be going up.

Well, I suppose the money to build a wall around the D of C so the members of congress can't get out has got to come from somewhere :D
