In malware HELL!!!!!

on 4/4/15 I went looking for info on VEE Tires, after reading the thread about them and after going to the vee website, I clicked on a link to find more info about their 2 designs for rear tires!!! WELL, after several days of trying to remove the more than a dozen programs, THAT I DID NOT WANT, I gave up! I was left with a monster called crossbrowse & 2 other little monsters that would not uninstall. While I was trying to remove the monsters more would start loading if I was online looking for info to uninstall the main pain in the azz, so I gave up and took my laptop to the local computer guys to get fixed.
I am now using my OLD Gateway desktop, with XP:laugh:, that I had to dig out of many unpacked boxes!!!!!!! I hope this works & my broken back really hopes it works

it didn't work, I tried that one & others, including 2 that were suppose to be JUST for crossbrowse. None worked & a couple were a pain to uninstall. The guy I took my laptop to thought he could remove it while I waited, but after he tried 3 different ways, even he gave up on quick fixes. I let him keep it to do a complete clean including wiping everything & starting over from an empty drive, if needed. I saw some other, older, programs that were considered troublesome or malware and wanted them gone.
I have always tried to only download 'known safe' or name brand programs and I've been LUCKY, until 4/4/15, but I'm really angry that this junk came from a respected company's website!

just for grins I googled, "malware on mac computers" and here were the results

About 8,970,000 results[ (0.36 seconds)

I could be wrong, but with that many results in less than a 1/2 second I don't see a mac in my future

I Googled "malware in Windows computers", got 33,200,000 in 0.31 seconds. Neither of these are the number of malware issues that have been detected in computers, they are just hits on words contained in the search; how to detect malware, how to eliminate malware, programs to detect malware and so on.ThumbUp

I'll throw one out there. I Googled maleware in Ubuntu computers and got 1,950,000 in .53 seconds. I've been running Ubuntu which is a Linux based OS for several years, no virus scanner needed, no maleware problem and its lightning fast compared to a Windoze based computer.

Mac OSX and Ubuntu are both Linux based operating systems and quite similar actually. There are also many other Linux based operating systems available and many are free.

Hi Mike, glad you mentioned Ubuntu, I was just looking at some of that stuff, as a direction to go with this desktop XP system. I have hung on to this for a backup, but have not had it running in years, since I bought my laptop. All the computer help forums I have looked at, so far, have talked about Ubuntu & other Linux systems, so I will try to switch to one of the Linux systems one I get my laptop back. How hard was it to install, I'm scared to death of doing much with computers & being dyslexic does not help at all!:gah: I have always had problems with computer terms, there are so many words that mean the same & too often people & instructions go back & forth with the terms.
SO, how hard is it to switch to a Linux system for normal people & do you have any pointers before I start? Thanks:wave4:

Its not to difficult of a switch, at first it seems odd until you get used to some of the differences. When you do choose to make the switch, make sure you get the current LTS (Long Term Support) version. The current version is 14.04.2 which is a LTS version http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop#. The nice thing about a Linux based system is Linux doesn't hog resources like Windoze does, I'd also do some reading on their forums http://ubuntuforums.org/ if you haven't already.

I only have 2 Win based PC in the house, one my Wife uses and one I only use to tune Harley's with. All the rest of my computers are Linux based. The lap top I'm using right now is set up to dual boot, It defaults to Ubuntu at boot up, or I can choose to go into Win 7 if I need to use something which will only run under Win. Ubuntu does have a Windows emulator call Wine, some Win base programs will run in it.

I'm also running a file server using Ubuntu server edition. I'm also into using computers to store and stream movies and such, I use LinuxMCE as my media server.
