HD 3000 mile service?

Time flies when your having fun! So it seems not too long ago that we did my 1000 mile service, HD's next is 5k but when I was in getting some goodies (shopping) looked up at the board and there was a posting with a 3k service oil change.. I'm currently sitting at that now, wanted to ask everyone your thoughts on this. I'm running Amsoil fully for all fluids. Should I wait or do it? :Shrug:

In this day and age, it is sort of incredible that dealers will advertise services that are not needed or recommended by the manufacturer. I sure would hate to see you throw away perfectly good and expensive Amsoil. I would also consider getting your service done with another dealer if one is fairly close by because the one advertising 3k services is just trying to take advantage of their clientele. Better, yet, get a factory service manual and do your own fluid changes at the factory recommended intervals. Keep all of your receipts for materials, document the heck out of the services you perform and you will keep your warranty intact.

It is not that hard and it will help you to understand your bike at a different level.

Thanks for the feedback, and dually noted! I felt that it was a little crazy to change so soon but since this is my first "new" purchase I wanted to do it right. I was doing my own fluid changes on my 2000 sportster but with no down time between work and life events it seems easier to have it serviced.

I use full synthetic in all 3 holes...And i have the oil changed every 6 thousand miles..
My first was at 1 thousand and the next was at 7 thousand and so on...Don't forget if you do the 5 thousand you'll only have 4 thousand on your oil...So if you do it at 3 thousand you'll only have 2 thousand on your oil...Way too soon.....

Dealer did my 1K and 2.5K free for me on my 2014. I now have 23k+ and have done all my own oil service.
I do engine (Syn3) and primary (Formula+) every 5K. I do tranny (Bel-Ray 85W-140) every 10K.

Thanks Bob, I have to ask about the 1 & 2.5 K was that part of the deal $ when you purchased? Or do they just do that? I paid big for my 1k and not looking forward to the 5, Should I be worried about the "casting crap" :Shrug: this is my first big twin and I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for. For the longest time the ticking sound drove me crazy. Dealer service said nothing wrong...:cxtv: the first service helped a little

Good to know! Never had to break one in before...all I ever had were used bikes over the years. Glad you guys are here on the forum for words of wisdom.ThumbUp

Been usin Klotz synthetic , being its red and easier to see on dip stick. When it's no longer red, replacement time.

My Dealer does the 1000 mile service for free on all cycles sold by them. I negotiated the 2500 mile extra free service at time of sale.

That HD dealer sounds like a keeper! Ours just changed management so maybe there's hope for future negotiations ThumbUp ... I did get a good deal on the bike, so I guess they felt that was good enough. They tossed in our complementary t-shirt's of course Lol... and that's about it

There are quite a few good dealers. Mine doesn't charge labor for the first 2 oil changers..And no transportation or setup charge...Thats properly over a grand right there...And they been at the same location since 1956.....

I have always been treated very well at the dealer where I bought my trike. I have also bought other bikes from them. In my opinion, Barnett's H-D in Las Cruces, NM is easy to do business with. Jim
