Guardian Bell Etiquette?

Back in 2004 after I bought my first new bike, a greybeard biker close friend of mine fitted a guardian bell on the lower right floorboard bracket, then took it for a short ride to bless it.

When I sold the bike several years ago, I kept the bell and hung it on the lid of my tool chest as a reminder of him and our conversations we had over the years.

I just got news he passed a few weeks ago of pancreatic cancer and it reminded me of the bell he put on my bike. I brought it in the house and carefully polished it up while saying a prayer for him and remembering some of his stories.

My wife saw me shedding a tear with the bell in my hand and offered to hang it on the bike for me in remembrance of him. Is this appropriate or should I keep it retired on the tool chest since he isn’t here to hang it on the bike for me?

It's up to you. But the idea behind the gremlin bell is that it is given freely as a gift by someone to you and then placed somewhere on the bike low to the ground to ward off any gremlins you may encounter on a ride. And it was a gift to you, not any particular bike. I don't think it matters who, either you or your dear friend, actually puts it on the bike. I see nothing wrong with you placing it on your bike yourself. And it would be a great way to remember him as you ride.

Carl,
I also see no problem with putting the bell on.
It was already given to you by him.
That would be an awesome way to keep his memories directly with you.

FYI: I have 3 bells on mine. 👍🏻IMG_6990.jpeg
