HI everyone I got a question about my radio. awhile back I hit a hard bump, every since then I have been blowing radio fuses. I checked the wiring and the plugs, I cleaned the handle bar controls. still blows fuses. im wondering could the short be internal to the radio, can I open it to repair it.

I'm going to check some CDs of Goldwing stuff, I may have a repair manual for the GL1800 audio unit.

I'm wondering if there isn't a pinched wire somewhere.

checked the wires no cracking no pinching. all plug pins are good. I cleaned out the handle bar controls. we were thinking of sending a back signal into the harness. pull the positive wire and connect a tracker, the loudest signal should be the short. but I wont let my friend do it. im worried about the computer.:xzqxz:

if the radio can be opened ill pull it, I can fix electronics. we have the knowledge.:xzqxz:;)

The radio can be opened. Tomorrow I'll try to locate the CD with the manual, print it and get it in the mail to you.

Disconnect the radio. Does it still blow the fuse? No, then reconnect the the radio. If the radio has to be connected its in the radio. If it blows the fuse with the radio disconnected then its wiring. Course I'm probably missing the obvious here but just thought I'd mention it.

If you determind it is the radio Sierra Electronics in Ohio repairs them for a really fair price. You can call Jeff there to talk to him and he can walk you through a proceedure to determine that. I just sent mine to him recently. Jeff Sierra Electronics (937) 335-8939 2080 Experiment Farm Rd, Troy, OH 45373 Call and talk to him first.

Good luck

IT'S OK trike lady is sending me the manual I need to fix it myself, I very educated in electronics, my bet is as soon as I open it I will know whats wrong.

to trike lady I would love access to your manual library I can send you an email address it would make sending them easier and cheaper.

It will be easier and faster, however the process to copy all the discs over to the 1TB hard drive is going to be time consuming. Here's the box of proof, some service manual CDs were stolen when a box of desk supplies got taken and I hope I had a duplicate copy. Once I have it set up and organized, I'll be able to offer any Goldwing related material to anyone. :)

The manual is on the way.

I received the printed manual it will be very helpful, it full of schematics of everything. plus component parts list to replace bad parts, we know where to get those if we know what we want, now we do.

thank you again

You're welcome. Glad I had and found the material. Some day I'll get it all on a 1TB hard drive for fast access. :yahoo:

This is starting to bug me now. I pulled the stereo, opened it and nothing. all parts good, no burned or broken components in the main unit. no cracks in the board and no loose parts and no blown caps. going to open the control box part of the unit next. to be honest I don't expect to find anything as when the stereo was on it worked properly no issues other than blowing the fuse. at this point I know all grounds clean and tight, all components good, all boards good. no burns on anything.

Which fuse is being blown? Does it happen when you turn the key to start the trike or the radio on? I'm asking this because Honda will put other systems on the same fuse.

the 15 amp radio fuse blows while the radio is on:gah:

checking the relay and connected systems as well as rear speakers is next:xzqxz:

I looked at the chart and fuse #21 controls the audio and accessory fuse. The only component that may be causing the problem is the accessory relay.

Now im definitely thinking relay, nothing wrong with my gauges could be the trunk latch, could be a reverse issue. ill be checking all of this:confused:

I believe the combination meter, audio and trunk latch are on the same circuit. Swap the #12 relay with one of the same value.

ive been thinking about this, the fuse is currently blown, the gauges work, the trunk open notification works, the radio does not. Im hurt this morning so I cant currently test or check anything. when I can ill check which fuse is blown first.

fuse 21 is a 15 amp listed as audio/acc, fuse 22 is a 20 amp fuse marked battery fuse and trunk, audio, meter. the one that is blowing is fuse 21, this explains why the gauges and truck still work. now there are also separate relays for each fuse, according to the wiring diagram. there may be a possible short in the rear headset wire it was pinched between the seat and frame at one time. im thinking the hard hit was what caused the wiring inside the headset wire to be cut and caused the short. so im going to unplug the rear headset wire, and check the acc relay, just saying a good electronics person should be able to trace a short with this info. I hoping im right. I believe now the short is in the headset wire and has damaged the relay. anyway this is the only thing that could be wrong as far as I can tell. no other wiring damage so this makes sense.

thank you for helping get my thinking started and getting me to look at the diagram, at least im still able to think once the skip is fixed.:D

Any luck with your problem? If not you could call Jeff in Service at Sierra Electronics very smart person who maybe could walk you through it. He may have seen it before, they repair the electronics in these bikes. Good Luck (937) 335-8939

I found the short

we just finished buttoning up the top cover in 100+deg heat. the headset wire was fine, not using it though so took it out anyway, however the driving lights were shorted, these being the only other thing factory on the acc circuit. so I left the driving lights disconnected and buttoned everything else up. :clapping:

THE RADIO WORKS NOW.:clapping::clapping::clapping:

I will attend to the driving lights later. :xzqxz::gah:

there is a factory 3 prong black plug on the harness that plugs into the left switch panel that turns on the driving lights. all 3 pins were shorted, so I just left it unplugged. no more short for now. soon I will pull the lower front cover and find out how the lights shorted out.
