need some help guys! I'm in Cherokee NC on my 2012 honda motor trike kit and I have a loud clicking coming from the left rear tire area. I hear it when the speed increases up to all thu the gears but don't hear it at high speeds. Everything is closed up here and I'm 300 miles from home.any ideas what may be going on and is it safe to ride or will I tear something up even more? it only does it when the throttle is engaged and does not do it coasting or in neutral .

I hear you buddy. Sorry way to far away to help. Not to in tune with Motor Trike. Sounds like a brake problem. If you slightly apply rear brake when you hear it does it disappear. ( keep throttle on not coasting) it could also be the universal joint. U can SEE it under the pass seat.right behind the battery box. Grab hold of it and try to twist it with your hand. It should have very little play.

If you have an independent suspension conversion I'd be looking at cv joints and drive shaft u joints. If it's a sold axle then just the u joints. Your 2012 still had the second generation drive shaft originally and so it is very possible that front u joint let go. See if you can get a back tire up on a curb somewhere so you can get under the trike to check U joints. The CV joints are much harder to check without jacking the rear end off the ground...

I sure feel for you!!! Problems like this are not fun any time. Away from home they are extra bad!!! Hope you get going quick. If you do have the old style driveshaft and that front joint is shot the number you need to replace it is a NEAPCO 1-0170 or Spicer 5-170X. Of course that will not do you any good if you can't find someone to swap it out.

You won't get any one at Motor Trike until Monday now but based on your date it should be under warranty... Sorry for you problem!!

Is there any kind of emergency/parking brake? Might want to try same advice as above while slightly engaging that.

At Americade recently, I had a nice chat with the "shop guru" for Motor Trike. If everything else "fails", I have PM'd you his contact information. Hope you solve the problem...

ok.... the sound seems to come and go. about 50 miles ago I could make it do it every time now it does it sometimes and is not as loud as it was. Still does it once in awhile. I jacked it up and moved the tire back and forth and rocked it checking for bearings and didn't hear anything unusual. I don't get it. Can a cv or u joint make noise sometimes and at other times nothing?

Yes either one can depending on the load applied while under power.... miles on your trike since the kit was installed? I'd be calling your installer for his advice / of course he's somewhere having a beer!! But clicking is the sign of a dry or cooked U-Joint as some of the little roller bearings may be missing / now the CV joint is more of a thumping as there are no small bearings in CV's - neither one is good!! Drive slow just in case the driveshaft fails, a bad CV won't fall out / both a due to lack of lubrication...

Hope that helps....South Carolina is a long way from Texas....sorry!!!

Shot in the dark here, Have you checked to see if there isn't something stuck in the tire like a bolt/screw or a piece of medal??

I know you are serious and rightfully so. MANY years ago I was riding "Observer" for a friend using his learner's permit to learn how.... He kept stopping and starting. I asked him why. He had a clicking sound. Turned out to be a 16 penny spike with the head stuck in the tire treads. Every time the tire went around the spike hit the frame.  . We get a chuckle out of that to this very day!!

I did manage to get it to a place where I could back it up and pull the wheels off. I found absolutely nothing. I put the wheels back on and have rode about 100 miles and not one peep! I've done everything I can to make it happen and it won't now. if it is a dry u joint or whatever wouldn't it keep doing it? I just don't understand

While you had the wheels off did you check the drive shaft? A friend of mine thought he felt/heard something on his '03. It took me at least five miles to catch a hint of noise. When we pulled the drive shaft it was very obvious. The front joint was trashed....

I'm not saying the problem must be that but it is a strong possibility. If it is, I doubt you can make it back home. Getting stranded in the middle of no where would not be fun!

Yes, a bad u joint noise can come and go. Stop at any mechanics garage and have the u joint greased and /or replaced. You do not need a motorcycle shop. This is the car 1/2 of the bike.

I had the same type issue a few weeks ago as I headed home from Run for the Wall. Started by making a squeaking sound when I let off the throttle. The it got more of a metal sound. I thought it was something stuck in a tier or something on the front. A few miles down the road it got louder and did it except when I was at cruse speed. I stopped and found the front U-Joint was going out. I would look at the joints and hope you can find a mechanic to help you out.
