Easily Confused?

Good morning Ladies & Gents ...

Picked up new HD Shift Linkage for the 2017 RT. The kit comes with a rear shifter rod lever cover which I won't be using because it's straight and the rear lever on the trike is curved. My question is about the "spacer" (washer) that goes behind the cover. Although not using the cover, do I still use the "spacer" or is it discarded along with the cover? The instructions are confusing about this and don't address the curved rod lever. Any input will be greatly appreciated.
