California Fuel Pumps

How do you Californians get a full tank of fuel? We were recently there with the trike, and each time I fueled, the pump shut off before the tank was full, and wouldn't let me top off.

Hey Rick... You have to hold the pump in your left hand, then use your right hand to pull the rubber vapor gasket thingy up against the handle so the fuel will still pump. It is a real pain in the a$$, but you will be short almost a gallon if you don't do that. You can top it off right up to the neck if you pull that gasket up manually.

Thanks, Trent! ThumbUp

We were better than a gallon short at each fill-up; what a royal pain! Wish I had your advice earlier! :xzqxz:

You can do the same thing when filling up a vehicle too, but if the pump attendants see you do it, they will yell at you. Gotta save the earth from those pesky fumes you know. They don't say anything to Bikers though. We are too tough lookin' I guess Ha Ha ;)

Just like when you go through Oregon where the gubmint does not allow you to pump your own gas. Self service is against the law!! If you forget and jump outta your Truck or car and start to fill your tank, you WILL get scolded right now. But,, they will hand you the hose to fill your own Bike cuz they don't wanna slop on your paint or whatever and suffer the consquences.

Yep, New Jersey has those same nozzles.:AGGHH: There is one station in North Jersey almost at the PA. border [Rt.206] that doesn't have it, And being its on a road that's traveled by a lot of Motorcycle's, Most will fill up there, ThumbUp

Glad we don't have those situations in Michigan. I swear the cover goes over the end of the gas nozzle, you can hardly see to put it in the tank! :Joker3:

Would something like this help?

I just hold it back with my right hand[I'm a southpaw] Easy to do,
And just as a precaution I touch/ground the medal part of the nozzle with a bare hand before I put the nozzle in the tank;; [Static Electricity]

MOCO use to have a device in the P&A catalog that you put in the filler neck and would let you use those nozzles and also let you do a decent job of getting the tank full. I have one and use it when I run into those pumps.

Here you go. The black bag is the HD bag to store it in and came with it. I don't know if this is still available or not because I couldn't find it in the current P&A catalog, but that doesn't mean it's not in there somewhere. See your dealer I have mine :D and sorry I could not find a part number.

I've seen those and always wondered what they were for. They were available at one time from online distributors like cruiser customizing.

I would think that after a few fill-ups with that' You'll be wondering how to get the gas smell out of your bags...

Yep. I kept it in the left lower fairing all by itself on my '12 model and I'm still hunting a home for it on the '15. You will also be washing your hands everytime you use it to so it promotes good hygiene :D. Thank goodness I seldom need to use it.
