Belt drive rubbing battery box MT

In pulling my dead battery today, I was shocked to find that my rear drive belt had eaten all the way through my battery box and about 1/4 inch into the side of the battery. Must have heated the battery up and finally killed. Has anyone had this problem and what is the cause?

Forgot to mention that my bike is a 2008 Harley Ultra Trog by Motortrike.
