Back in the shop

I have the 259E cam in my motor, but have not noticed any more mechanical noise. The open filter air breather does make more sucking noise than it did before the stage 4 change over. My BOB {Babe On Back} is not happy about the stronger deeper louder exhaust concussion She feels back there now. She has started wearing ear plugs.

"Baffles".....;)

I have no intention of turning this into an oil thread but, here goes!!!
Those with concerning motor "noise", are you using sythetic oil???
Just wondering if that has any effect on the noise?
Mobile 1 T4 for twins seems to be an excellant choice to try!

Lets talk about baffles... I have V&H HO mufflers.. Would like your advice of what I could do...??

I'm gonna' be trying to suppress the decibels down soon on my VTX1800 with V&H 2" Slash Cut Pipes....I quieted down my Wife's VTX1300 Trike last year with a combo of Cobra fiberglass wrap type baffles, and some extra fiberglass wrapping from a muffler shop slipped into them, and then bolted in place...still had a deep, pleasant tone, but no backfire or "loud noise"....hoping I can do the same for the 1800.....;)

With my 11 T/G I have true duals and rush slips-ons [1'75] Way too loud for me.
So I got a set of DK's Thunder Torque's that quieted it down for me... ThumbUp

I have the V&H Power duals with the High Output Mufflers. Yes they are loud. It's a deep tone. My hearing is getting worse so I should start wearing ear plugs. Most of it is from the wind. When I had my Softail my ears were so bad after riding to Sturgis I couldn't hear till the next. My wife thinks I need hearing aids now. I don't want to wear those things. Plus what I do for a living doesn't help. Sawing and using air tools and such.

I have the Power Duals with the HO's also... very deep sound,, and according to my Sweet Passenger, very much louder since the stage 4. To me they didn't sound louder, just a more noticeable deeper thump. But She sits closer to the rear end than I do and I don't doubt her at all. I think I will try the Thunder Torque stuff from DK and see if that will help.

Hey Trent, what exactly do you have in your motor? Sounds like mine but would like to compare. Don't understand why my valve train is so much louder than yours. Thanks, Jim

I have the SE ported and polished heads, SE high compression pistons, 259E cam, all the other innards that have to go along with that stuff, SE Extreme Breather, SE Race tuner, a bigger diameter air breather to suck in more air too. I even took off the little metal plate with holes in it off the front of the E Breather to suck in more air. My filter is now completely exposed on the sides and front. Had to beef up the clutch to handle the xtra torque. My dealer does not have a Trike dyno, so they tuned it using a map from a friend of mine that did the same thing on his 2012 Ultra. His dyno'ed at 114 hp. but you lose some of that with a Trike of course.

Took 3 times to get the pinging to stop, and sometimes I will still get just 1 single ping if I really twist it hard. Not much they can do about that one at this point. Compared to how it pinged on the first shakedown, I am happy with just that 1 occasional ping. I can ride all day without it pinging once, so that works for me. The motor actually runs as quiet mechanically as it did before the work was done. Like I said earlier,, just more sucking noise from the breather.

Very happy with the performance. It is a maddening thing how you can do the same thing to 2 different bikes and get such different results. I hope yours is fixed now and will make you happier!!

I have the exact same thing you have but now with the .005 over pistons & had the jugs bored and S&S crank and rods with S&S adjustable push rods. The lifters are Compition Cam. I did have 100hp & 108 lbs torque. But with the rings install the right side up so i'll have more compression maybe i'll get more power. I would like to get it Dynoed again. My engine is very noisy like Mike said his was. It drives you crazy after a while.

JC,,..
I got the same set up but in a Heritage.

I know it makes a big differance being in a Trike for HP and Tq. But just to let you know the motor has held together well and dosen't seem noisey.

I also know my ain't makin no 114 hp. Maybe that's why it ain't broke yet?

Oh, and in a Heritage I am very happy with it.

I don't think the 120 in the Trike is noisey either, but maybe the pipes are too loud.

Later, eighty80.

You could be hearing the pushrods rub the tubes, the S&S adjusables are notorious for making noise due to rubbing the pushrod tube. They are larger in diameter than stock or Screamin Eagle one perfect fits. If I remember right the stage 4 kit comes with stock length SE perfect fits which are non adjustable.

Mike, I did have the solid perfect fit pushrods in it. Lou thought maybe they were making noise. I told him to try the adjustable ones. That's what he wanted to try also. I'm glade we had the adjustable ones in since we had to replace the front lifters again. Sure makes that easier.

You remembered correctly Mike... I have the SE perfect fits. Do they fit perfect? Ha ha!! Who knows!

Hey Jim... What procedure did they have you do to break-in the new motor? I am just wondering if that can have an effect on what kind of noise it makes now? My tech Marty filled it with regular HD motor oil, handed it over to me and said, put a 100 miles on it, don't go over 3600 rpm and don't go below 2800 rpm...But don't baby it either... bring it back and I will change the filter and put synthetic oil back in it. He wanted the first 100 miles with regular oil to help everything get seated well. He was surprised when I was back in less than 1 1/2 hours with 106 miles on it. Pulled it right in while it was still hot and made the change. There was some metal in the oil but he said that was normal. Told him about bad pinging,, put it right back on the computer and then took it out again. Pinging was way diminished but still there. Retuned again and got it fixed as well as it is gonna get.

Hey Trent, glad you got most of the pinging out. When I drove down to Indy last Saturday I noticed a little pinging but not bad. I might take it and have it dynode again in the near future. My guy told me to drive it 300-500mi and everything should be ok. I kept it around 3,000 but not much more. I varied the speed as much as possible. That's hard to do. He put Amzoil in like I had for the breakin period. I asked him would it be better to put straight oil in and he said it would be find. Doesn't use oil and no metal in the oil. Thank god for finding someone who knows how to rebuild motors the right way. Hopefully I won't have anymore issues. My engine sounds the same way it did when I picked it up from the dealer in 2011.

That's good to hear Jim... Sounds like ya got it fixed. They told me they could most likely get the last ping out of it but I might not like the performance change that would happen from adding a little more fuel to the mixture. It is pretty much maxed out right now. He sez one ping here and there when I really twist it will not be a problem, so I will trust him on that, and keep ridin' it like a happy chimpanzee! Have fun and ride safe,, if that is possible these days..! Ha ha!

That's one good thing about adjustable pushrods, they do make lifter swaps or cam swaps a whole lot quicker and easier. I've always detested adjustable pushrods, I decided to give them a try in my 120. I had a lifter that took way longer to pump up than it should have, so I decided to install a set of S&S premium lifters and Smith Brothers adjustable pushrods I bought from Fuelmoto.

As luck would have it one of the new lifters takes a bit to pump up also, just doesn't take as long as the ones I replaced.
