A Jerk

The temp. got up to 58 degrees to day here in Ga. I rode the T/G for about 35 miles mostly in town but some on the straight away, I kept it at 2500 rpm or higher, most of the time in 4th gear, no more jerk :D.
A great day for a ride, Thank you all for the great advice, lboos.

Glad you figured it out! I have always ridden by sound and tachometer-on the low end I never let it drop below 2200 RPM (2500 is fine). I agree with the guys that aren't nuts about a six speed. The only thing 6th is good for is an overdrive, and on real long hauls. It also reduces engine RPM at high speeds fo better mileage.

Jim, I sure agree with only 5 gears. I don't use 6th. on either bike unless I'm above 65mph, above 3000 rpm, and on the freeway. To me it's just an overdrive.

You would have crapped if you had ever ridden an 09 - 10 triglide with the crummy gearing they came with due to the 32 tooth trans sprocket. They sucked bad, pulling a grade even at 75 mph in 6th required a down shift.

Hey Oldmsocko, how's it going? I swear I'm going to drag Dennis over to see you guys, now that I'm retired and have more time. Dennis, you can chime in here anytime now! I know it sounds like you need to shift into 6th gear but you get better milage in 5th. There is a long hill going west on 40 out of Albuquerque that I have to downshift to 5th anyway. Even with my built-up motor it's not enough. I just don't understand why poeple think they have to be in 6th gear. I was plenty happy with 5 gears on my Ultra. Wish thats all the trikes had. Sorry to go on & on. Jim Colson

Certainly hope you 2 guys make it over our way. I am retiring this year in June. Can't wait.

Oh man, I would not have liked that at all! I wonder how many out there are still rideing that way?

I even had the sprocket changed on my 2010 Heritage to a 30 tooth. Luv it with the 259 cams. Now for the new heads....??

Congrats on the retirement, you sure earned it!! I remember when I was there over 25 years ago, how dedicated you where.ThumbUp I bet that will be a big party.pepperpepper

Congrads. Oldsocko June is a good month to retire in. Hope we have a great riding season and can hookup during the summer. I will try and talk with you later as summer nears. I would like to meet you and your son both.

Retirement! I have been there for almost 2 years and this parts thing has kept me busier than I was on the fire department.:cxtv:
Jim, I will be down the month of March and maybe some of April BUT yes, lets do a little trip after that. I plan on allot of road time also out West this year.
Dennis

Hey Dennis, its good to hear from you. Miss talking to you. So whats going on in March & April? It doesn't start warming up here till May. Looking forward to a ride somewhere. We are going to Cal. for 2wks in May with a stop in Vegas. We aren't driving the bike this time cause it takes to long there & back. Hey eighty80, You will like the way your bike runs with new heads along with the cam. I have the same cam with the 10.5-1 pistons & SE 100+ Heads. Runs strong. Thats where they restrict you breathing & power,in the heads. You'll like it. Do you have a tuner? I have the race tuner I think. Not sure, I'd have to look it up. I know it cost $450-500. Jim

Oh yeah, I have the sert. I seem to have good luck with them, although I don't tune my own.
The dealer has the throttle body, injectors, air cleaner, and ACR"s in, but...and a big but, the heads are BACKORDERED. I'm number 11 on the list and we are shootin for March first.

I'm not loseing any ridin time (still snowin) but it would be nice to have it done and waitin in the garage.

I should have got the heads when I did the other work but you know how that works.

For the way I ride, I like the 259 cams. It's pretty tame below 3500 rpms so it's easy to stay calm around town. When needed the power is there, just wanted a little more. I knew I couldn't have two 120R's.

I thought you had the Stage IV already? Did you just have them do just the 259 cams at the time?

Yeah, I had the 96 to 103 stage III. Also went to SE comp. and 30 tooth sprocket then.
Of course SE air cleaner and V & H exhaust. All of this was done right out of the shoot. Zero miles.
The 259 cams were new and both me and the dealer were not quit sure what to expect?
So I figured I would maybe try the heads later. Well guess what.... later is here.

Those are very interesting shifting points, perhaps an average for all riders but shifting is about knowing your engine and feeling the shift point for each gear. My trike doesn't like to feel sixth gear until I am at a minimum 60 mph and the moment I shift into sixth it's like jet fuel, a burst of power that is deal for highway speeds. Since I changed the cam I also have a higher shifting point on the lower gears. Sounds like he is shifting too soon and the engine is starving for power.
