Has anybody changed their gear oil in their trike yet? This question is brand specific, Motor Trike Adventure Kit IRS. What is the correct amount of oil?
Where should the level be when full? How far below the filler plug?
Any help would be appreciated, I called motor trike and they stated 1.2 quart. About 4" below the filler plug. Just don't sound correct.

This is a copy and paste from the Adventure Owner's Manual....

DIFFERENTIAL OIL
It is only necessary to change the differential oil every 100,000 miles. A vacuum pump is needed to pump the differential oil out of the housing through the fill plug on the front of the rear end housing. This can be done by an authorized Motor Trike dealer. The acceptable oil level is 3/8” to ½” below the fill plug.

It may very well take that 1.2 quarts to get the 3/8 to 1/2 inch level...

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your input. I had a call into Motor Trike and they passed on the information I needed. I thought some of you may have ran across this before and I would have received an answer faster from our members. The differential holds 1.2 quarts of 90 weight gear oil.
The level should be 1 1/2" -1 3/4" below when full.

The reason I needed the correct level was I topped off my differential to the level stated in the service manual found here on line. When filled to that level I was leaking oil from the vent on the differential when on a long ride.

So I pumped out as much oil as I could and refilled it to 1 3/4" below the filler plug. I will take a long test ride and recheck the level and look for any more leaks. Motor Trike also stated that the manual found on line was not made by them, someone gathered the information and put it together on their own. As you can see not all the information is correct. They are working on a manual but it will take some time before they publish one.

It's a pet peeve of mine. It ought to be a law that before you can sell anything mechanical you must include a manual. What do the techs use? Is it their way of making you go to them for service?

I asked for a service manual and there is none from motor trike for IRS kit.
As for their owners manual I brought that up to their Tec the information for fluid level states 3/8 - 3/4 of an inch from the bottom of the fill plug. and it is incorrect. They went out into the shop and measured the fluid level in a unit they just built because they weren't sure where the correct level should be. 1 1/2" - 1 3/4" this is correct. They took the time to solve my problem, but there shouldn't have been a problem. They need to change their owners manual.

Also the service manual found here on line is not a motor trike manual!!!!
Someone made it up. Some of it is accurate some not.

I thought the manual is for a motor trike straight axle trike NOT an IRS suspension trike. And Im sure Motor Trike isnt happy about it because they dont like money being taken out of their installers mouths for repairs. Why do you think you dont see manuals for all of the major trike manufacturers.

What viscosity.

I'm thinking a lighter multi-grade Syn for Winter

Than a higher viscosity multi-grade for summer.

No big deal to drain and chaing and not worried about

spending approx $15.00 for a liter of each which will last until

I'm ninety and way too old to drive
