1340CC Evo trike power

I am currently mulling over the trike conversion vs. new TG decision. I would like to do the conversion but my main concern is that the stock 1340 Evo on my Electraglide will not provide sufficient power. Is that a safe assumption? If so, what performance upgrades , if any and at what cost, would be a sure fire solution?

Hi, I have a 1340 /1995 Harley flhtc with the Motor Trike kit that was installed at my Harley shop in 2008. I have no problem at speeds up to 70mph, but If it were me doing some mods I would opt out for a 96 or 103 motor (harley) or the Ultima 100ci motor with the 100 hp unit from Ultima. I have friends that use this combo and are really glad they did. I have 112,900 on her now and she is tight due to changing the main bearings (and others) at 101,000 after a quick trip to Daytona. The 1340 is not a good motor for high speed over long duration (oil blow by from upper head) but a very good motor for 65 to 75 for 100 miles or so. great for bar hoping but not for high speed interstate rolling. My wife's 96ci 07 fxst roles all day at 75 with no problems, she has to wait for me sometimes. Hope this is of use to you. Ray

It depends on what you want performance wise. The bone stock 80c.i. Evo runs about 66hp and 78 ftlb torque. Won't set any land speed records, but should be OK if you don't need a racer. A new 2013 base HD Ultra Classic Tri-Glide has an MSRP of $30,999. You could likely trike your Glide for much much less, even with adding intake and exhaust, go the bore and stroke route, cam, up the compression, or even replace the engine with an aftermarket big inch Evo style motor. Plus you'll have more style choices from the different aftermarket kit makers, and less of a heat problem that the Twin cams have.

You don't specify what year your Glide is. Different years of the Evo had their own set of good points, problems and changes. In contrast to ray4ausa above my 1990 FLHS will run all day at highway speeds. It breathes from the lower end, not from the heads, was put through the re-manufacturing program a few years ago at 95,000 miles and, of course, doesn't have the weight and aerodynamics of the trike.

If your motor is still pretty fresh, you could have an Andrews EV27 cam installed, and put True Dual open exhaust on it. Open up the intake with a K&N filter, and put an S&S carb (jetted to the pipes and cam) on it. Have it tuned right and you should be OK on power. Price if you have it done is around 1200 bucks or more depending on what you do.:D

I had a 80 CU on my conversion and it moved the bike but needed just a bit more kick.(Torgue)
So either have your current engine redone or put in a larger CU engine. either way you go will work just depends on how much torgue you want.

First I would ask, how many miles on the drive line?? What is your budget you would be willing to spend on a older bike to convert?

If you want to keep riding the EVO powered bike, depending on the mileage it might be wise to invest in a engine overhaul. With that there are options to making the engine stronger. If the stock engine is a model year 1988- 1992 the EVO engine case had a tendency to crack on the left case. If this is year model range it falls in, it would be wise to replace the engine case with a stronger housing.

There are 6 speed gear kits that can be installed to lower your rpms for highway traveling on long road trips

Frankenstein trikes makes a good trike kit that wouldnt add much additional weight to you rig and if you wanted to travel you could add a hitch and tow a small trailer relatively cheap for more storage >>http://frankensteintrikes.com/

Just curious what HP and torque dose my 05 Ultra motor have. It is bone stock with 33,000 on it. I have an 05 Ultra/Lehman (heavy) and the power is fine, yes I would like more power but every time I check into it the info I get is all over the place so I don't have a clue what to do. zwerlpe it would be a lot less $ to do the conversion.

Your stock 88" Twin cam would be +/- 70ft lbs of torque & +/- 66hp. Option to make more overall power are only as deep as you dig into your check book. Increasing the cubic inches and stroke length will give alot more grunt.

As an example, think of the 88" as the small block and a 124" big block engine. The big block can make more power at a lower compression ratio then the small block can. Thats not to say the small block cant make more power, but the small block has to built at a higher compression ratio to equal the big blocks power.

Hope this answers your question

I converted my '97 Electraglide Classic last year. I used a DFT kit, which added around 185# of weight (and is probably one of the pricier kits). I also installed a raked triple clamp.

The motor is stock except for an Andrews EV-27 cam (and adjustable pushrods), SE air filter and rejetted stock carb. It also uses the stock (Y-pipe) exhaust system with the Rush mufflers supplied with the kit. I also changed the compensator sprocket to lower the gearing a bit. Last spring my wife and I towed a small (250#+/-) Harbor Freight-type trailer from central Calif. to Phoenix AZ and back. We ran 60-65 mph most of the way. I had to drop into 4th gear a couple of times over Tahachappi Pass, but still maintained 55-60 uphill. Otherwise we had no problems at all.

If I had it to do over I would consider buying a new Triglide. But we're very happy with it, and while you can't really have too much power, it's certainly adequate.

INHO there really isn't much else you can do to the Evo motor to generate much more power (specifically torque), except cubic inches. If I get enough miles on the trike to wear the motor out, I'll probably look at an S&S 111-inch touring motor. Even with a new motor, I'll still have less in the it than a new Triglide.

The DFT rides much better, smoother than the stock two-wheel motorcycle, and somewhat smoother than a solid-axle Triglide (based on very limited testing of a Triglide). And my wife loves it. :)

I have the same year Ultra and trike kit. I also have a 95" kit, perf. air filter and true dual pipes with a Dyna Jet power commander. I don't have any power issues riding with my wife and some extra clothes and luggage. I don't live around any mountains so they might make a difference.
