You are right the engines do need some back pressure.Without (straight pipes) it you can burn up a engine. The old bikes had to increase the jet size. When the bikes are triked the extensions on the exhaust pipes increase the back pressure. <br />
When I got our VTX triked it was dogged out...
Just got back from a 1795 mile trip. The wife was running the trike with a KwikKamp trailer following up behind. The trailer weighs in at about 200lbs , plus another 100 + the wife crams in . <br />
When we left heading to a rally in Kansas ( 350 mi) , she was getting 21 to 23 at 60 to 70 MPH...
I have a triked out VTX1800 . So far have put a little over 18000 miles on it. Runs and handles great. I installed the B&B fuel manager . <br />
Fuel mileage has never been great . A lot has to do with the extended exhaust pipes. It increased the back pressure, I went in and drilled out a 3/4...
I had a GW 1500 trike. Was OK . Took it to Canada pulling a trailer weight about 400lb loaded. If I had the wife with me the mountains would have ben very hard. Now have a VTX 1800 , same trailer , & wife went from OKC to Vancouver BC. Up some steep inclines . No problem.
