Hey Gang,
A new rider who just turned 60 last month! Until the 3 Wheel Safety Course recently, I hadn't been on a motor bike since I was a "young, dumb" Air Force Lieutenant many moons ago. At that time, I woke up on a Thursday and said, "I wanna bike" ... by Tuesday I had one (for less than two months).

With age, comes wisdom. I don't have a bike yet with no desire to be on two wheels; I'm trying to apply a little more wisdom this time. :)

The personal dilemma: Tri Glide or Goldwing (in the used market)--decisions, decisions!

I've found this community helpful while lurking in the forums for a while and happy to be here. Looking forward to the adventure!

Welcome Neal, take a test ride on both and see which you prefer. The independent suspension conversions have the best ride by far and Honda Goldwings are pretty much bulletproof.

Welcome to TrikeTalk Neal! @Papa Zook is giving good advice and you need to test drive a bunch. And keep in mind that on Harley, the Triglide is a factory trike but you can also purchase a Harley bike and have that converted with an aftermarket kit like California Sidecar. There are no Goldwings factory trikes and all are aftermarket. The big names in conversions are California Sidecar, Road Smith, Hannigan, and Motortrike. There are older ones such as Lehman and Champion out there but they are no longer being produced so repair parts are going to be harder to find.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe a Triglide, as a complete factory unit can be financed and insured as a unit. Since Goldwings don't come from the factory as a trike and a kit is added, insurance and financing are done differently. If a Triglide is X amount, you can get the financial institution to finance the thing as a unit and insure it as a unit. I have never actually financed any trike I have owned but I think a Goldwing's finance would be based on NADA of the Goldwing without the kit. I know my Progressive Insurance works that way. Bike is worth X and the kit is added as an accessory. Something to consider and do some research on. My sister has a factory Harley trike and my BIL has a GL1800 trike btw; both are nice.

I am correcting this because it is not the case. Financing and insurance is not an issue for trike conversions. Yes the trike conversion is insured as an accessory, but that accessory is fully insured by the insurance carrier based on the total cost of the conversion as evidenced by the the invoice provided by the installer at the date of purchase. I know this because I have worked with multiple customers and insurance companies for 18 years and I'm currently working with two claims both are with Progressive, one is on a BMW Hannigan trike that was damaged during a potential buyer who wrecked it during a test drive and the other is a Harley Road Glide CSC that was broadsided by a lady who didn't see it. Any legit Insurance company will insure and will pay for damages incurred on any trike they insure, I have never seen a problem with this.

Welcome from the flatlands of Illinois!

There’s a GORGEOUS Indian Roadmaster Darkhorse with a CSC kit that just popped up for sale today on this forum! I really like my 2020 Ultra with Roadsmith kit, but if I could sell it quick, I’d be all over the Indian!

I was referring to the unit nature of the Harley. When you finance, it can be financed as a unit. If you get a new Goldwing (for instance), have a trike kit installed, can you finance it all as a unit? Just asking as I have never financed a trike. I do know how Progressive Insurance handles claims as I had a guy plow into me in Victoria. I as 100 percent his fault. I was on a 1998 GL1500 w/Roadsmith conversion and Progressive paid 100 percent of the damage repair (which was on the front and not the Roadsmith part). Again, not an expert on financing but the insurance part I do have experience with having filed a claim. BTW: Progressive was 100 percent real quality service. Estimator came out to my property and noted EACH part that needed fixing and used either a parts site like Partzilla (not sure which one) and had documentation on a GL1500 on hand and came up with an inclusive list and one price which was more than it actually cost to fix the trike as I got a great deal on paint and parts were not bad.

What I am saying is for many years now, there are massive numbers of converted trikes built and sold through both independent conversion shops and franchise Honda and Harley dealers and financing and insurance coverage is very straightforward and both coverage and claims service are not a problem.
