On the 11[SUP]th[/SUP] hour of the 11[SUP]th[/SUP]day of the 11[SUP]th[/SUP] month in 1918 the guns of November fell silent as anarmistice between Germany and the Allied Nations went into effect. TheTreaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919 and in November of that year,President Woodrow Wilson commemorated the end of World War I with the words “Tous in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemnpride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and withgratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed usand because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy withpeace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

The United States made November 11 a legal holiday on May 13, 1938 with theintention of honoring those who had served in the great war of 1914 to 1918. Unfortunately this was not the war to end all wars and after Americansserved in World War II and Korea, Armistice Day was changed on June 1st, 1954to Veterans Day to honor all American war veterans. After a brief periodfrom 1971 to 1975 when Veterans Day changed yearly to accommodate three dayweekends, the observation was moved back to strictly November 11 each year.

Today is Veterans Day. I wear with pride the label Veteran.

And a fine day it is to remember. Not only the men and women that have given the ultimate sacrifice but also to remember why and what they fought for. Many of us ware the badge of honor labeling us as "Veterans" but to me it's those that gave their lives that we really honor today.

Don't get me wrong. I am PROUD to be a Vet. More proud then many I suspect but I did nothing by comparison.

Thank You to all my Brothers and Sisters!!!

GOD BLESS AMERICA !!!!!

To ALL Veterans out there: Thank You for your service. You did more than I have done. You defended my freedom in my stead.

To those that made the ultimate sacrifice: There is no thank you that will ever be enough. It can only be said that they are all Heroes. Rest well knowing that you made the world better in giving your lives.

I am not one that can come up with the words I feel about being a veteran but I am very proud of my service. To all you other veterans out there Happy Veteran's Day and I salute you.

Thank you Keystone for the information on the history of Veterans Day.

I too wear the label with pride.

My father served in WWII his brother was in the Korean War, my oldest son in The Gulf War, Desert Storm. My middle son Afghanistan, my youngest was in Iraq and works at the VA Hospital now. I was in Vietnam. So I take great pride in Veterans Day and all those that gave more, bless them and their families for we were blessed to have all made it back.
