A few days ago rode the trike from Jax Beach to the Villages to see my daughter and family. Took a shortcut on a one lane, paved, country road in the Ocala National Forest. Lots of twists and turns.

Nice day, good weather, but all of a sudden a big ol' pickup truck appears out of nowhere. We're staring at each other, head to head with nowhere to go. Drainage ditches on both sides of the road.

Thought for sure I was a goner. Within seconds my life flashed before my eyes. Unfortunately the lives of two ex-wives and 3 ex-girlfriends also went flashing by. (Who knew that could happen?)

By some miracle we both swerved within yards of colliding and with one tire on pavement and one on a little grass strip passed within inches of tearing off the fenders.

We each braked and looked back to assess the situation. Not seeing any damage to the trike, I waved to the guy and kept going.

I've had close calls on my 2 wheelers before, but this one threatened to lighten my body weight by a few pounds and in need of clean underwear.

Anyway, all's well that ends well. :pepper:

I've had some very close calls but that one would make a person find religion real quick if they hadn't already!!!

So glad you both found that extra couple inches of grass.. :xszpv::xszpv:

There isn't a week that go's by when I'm riding my Bike or Trike that some Knucklehead [besides me] doe's something Stupid. Always something new that comes up to bite you and put in your book of things to look out for when your out in the open.. Happens even when I'm in my Truck, The only difference is when you're on a Bike or Trike 'it becomes up-close and personal...

Yep, I feel your pain. Here in metro Atlanta, we have no highways,
no roads, and no speed limits, all we have are Race Tracks. :AGGHH:

Glad it worked out. Seems like both of you were out enjoying the road. The truck just had more protection good the 2 of you could make 2 lanes out of one. Just shows that good defensive driving does make a difference. Good job.

Wow! That sounded close. Take Highway 301 next time.

Thought about taking 301 through Starke, then down to 441, but have been across the back roads before without incident.

Good advice, though. Thanks. Probably a better route for me anyway, barring any construction obstacles. That route is only a few miles further.

Appreciate everyone's comments.

P.S. FRR, how do you happen to know the Florida roads? Snow Bird?

glad you made it past each other.:pepper: Next time throw all the ex's between you & the other guy, everyone needs some soft bumpers once in a while.:AGGHH::gah::wave4:

On a two lane today and came up upon a dump truck driving mostly on the shoulder. Soon found out why. The idiot had a flat and was trying to make it somewhere. Of course, the tire, a recap, starting coming apart. I was forced to brake hard waiting for all the debris to settle before I can find a place to get around the fool. Recaps should be banned.

how do you know it was a recap?

The entire tread came off in one piece, hitting the shoulder and the road, throwing rubber, rocks, and other crap everywhere. By blind luck using brakes and downshifting kept us far enough back to keep much of any of it from hitting us.

even a new tire will throw the entire tread, especially big truck tires, heat from heavy loads will destroy all tires. I'm not saying your wrong, just saying that all tires will throw the entire tread, but correct that retreads do it the most often.:gah::wave4:

He was probably trying to find a place where he could safely pull completely of off the road and not block traffic. Having a truck sticking half way out in a lane of a road at a dead stop is not exactly a safe thing to do either. Having been a truck driver I've had both recap and non recap truck tires come apart, no one likes it but it happens. I don't think calling the truck driver names is appropriate, he is just out trying to make a living.
