I have 3500 miles on my 2013 T/G, I took it back to the dealer the other day for a loud squeal while in 1st gear at 1200 rpm and about 8-10 mph with the clutch in or out after the normal temp. is reached, as soon as I take it out of 1st the squeal stops, I told the maint. asst. mgr. he took it for a ride in their parking lot and said yes their is a loud squeal as I said, he told me to wait till I have around 4500 miles and when I bring it in for the 5000 mile insp. they would check it out at that time, what pissed me off was his tone of voice when he told me that if they find a part that has to be replaced it would be under warranty, but if not I would have to pay for their time and trouble shooting :gah:, he already told me it was a loud squeal, and was not normal, am I overreacting ? should I just put a max. wedge on him and go see the real boss ? I have also been told by one of the salesman to drive like I stole it, that they all make all kinds of strange noises, Thanks for any advice.

BTW, I still have one more year on the warranty. it shifts smooth, and no trouble other then that squeal at slow speed like dragging your finger nails down a black board :AGGHH:.

hi guy
I think the ass-istant manager has a problem if there is someone over him owner etc. I would talk with them...that was not a response that most owner would like to hear that there employee gave a customer..
.magoo

Where does the squeal sound like its coming from?

It seems like it's coming from the forward lower part of the eng. between my feet, The squeal stops when you go to a higher RPM and speed, it only squeals in 1st gear while rolling at 8-10 mph at 1000-1400 rpm, when I pull in the clutch and let off the throttle you can hear it squeal also, but when I come to a stop the squeal stops, also when I am rolling and take it out of 1st gear the squealing stops.
BTW, this is my 1st new Harley.

Have a friendly talk with the owner, Maybe he doesn't know whats going on with his staff.?

Other wise find another dealer that is costumer oriented..

I was beginning to wonder about your motor mounts. Upper and lower It is rubber mounted. At 1000 -1400 rpm your not in your power band and vibration is more notable.
That's just off the top of my head.

If it sounds as if its coming from the primary drive system I would wonder about the clutch adjustment?

The other thing off the top of my head is to check your drive belt tightness and alignment?

P.S. put a max wedge on the guy and go over his head, If necessary go over the owners head and look in your owners manual for the number to complain over both their heads.
The answer the man gave you is unacceptable.

By the way, If it's a service issue expect to pay for it, but perhaps you can simple trouble shoot it your self with a few wrenches applied in the right spot? Perhaps a some SILICONE spray on the rubber mounts to see if it quiets it down also the mufflers may ride on rubber slides also, give them a shot.
I don't know if I am helping but it's worth a check?

The service write-up guy (asst mgr? har-har) WAS able to reproduce your complaint. He should have brought in your trike for service immediately. Even if it's a "wear" item, and not under warranty, it's not right, and should be fixed, not ignored. I'd start with the service manager, and if no results, take it up the ladder with the general manager, and owner. I'm betting you won't have to go past the service mgr...

iboos, I see your close by, I would like to know what dealer you went to ? I may want to avoid them. And keep us posted. Thanks for sharing.

First of all, you shouldn't have to pay for ANYTHING. AND, the dealer should FIX THE PROBLEM and not wait until 5000 miles. The ass't service guy already admitted a problem. Plus, for the salesman to say that "they make all kind of noises" is no answer at all. Besides what company turns out a product that has this kind of problem and dealers that won't even address it.

If the owner doesn't help I would go the regional manager and explain the comments to him/her. I'll bet you get action then. If you don't, sell that thing and buy another brand of bike.

Thanks for all your comments, I called the dealer today, they said to bring it in this wed. and they would ck. it out, I'll let every one how it went, Thanks.

Sully,
I really want to see how the dealer handles this before I start giving names.
I will know more by wed. that is if the rain will let me out of the house ;).

Fair enough, keep us posted.

Go to the top and don't stop on the way. I bought a bike that the previous owner had purchased a service package that was transferable. The first few times I took it in to be serviced they acted like they didn't want to do it. When I took it in for service for the 36000 mile it had a little over 35000 so they said it was not ready for the 36000 to wait and they would do it on the next trip (up to the 36000 they just changed the oil and filter and check everything but at the 36000 it gets the whole fluid change and air filter). When I took it back at about 38000 to get the 36000 mile they said I had missed the 36000 so they would have to charge me to do it. I said WHAT????? To make the long story short. Any time I take my bike in I don't talk to the service person or manager, I go straight to the top and if they don't want to deal with me I take my money elsewhere.

I took my T/G to the dealer this morning and talked to the service writer about the squealing problem, she said she would call their master tech. who had been with them, for over 20 years and was very good, he came out and talked to me about the problem before riding the bike, when he returned he told me that their was no problem, that 1st gear was straight cut as it needed to be stronger then the other gears, and at one time 5th gear was also straight cut but got so many complants
that Harley changed it to a bevel cut [hope I'm using the right term.] on the later 6 speed trans. because most people used 5th gear most of the time.

He said most Harleys have this same whine in 1st gear, but most riders go through 1st gear so fast that they don't notice it, and most riders don't stay in 1st gear at 10 MPH like I do when riding thru. the neighborhood slow.

He was very nice and seemed to know what he was talking about, he compared it to a straight shift car and the whine you get while in reverse and 1st gear, and I drive a 72 VW bug just about every day and he is right about that .

Anyway, the trike rides and shifts great, and this being my 1st new Harley I might have been looking to hard for something to go wrong, I might be the problem:blush:, it seems like every time I ride it I hear a new noise, I'm hoping I'll get use to all the Harley noise.

The next time any of you guys go for a ride please try going 10 MPH for a while and see if you hear this squeal/whine, clutch in or out as long as your rolling, and get back.

BTW..I did not see the Asst. Mgr...... and their was no charge.
Thanks for your time;).

Some people have a whine in first. I had an 11 TG, 35000 miles, no whine. Traded for a 13 TG. It whined from day one. 22000 miles now. Still whines in first. I'm not worried about it cause some do some don't.

your master tech was/is correct. whine is normal and mine has been doing it since day one. I live on a chert road that it 2 tenths of a mile long and I generally use 1st while on this short stretch. the whine has/is always there at 10 mph...
yep, and it does sound exactly like my old honda civic 5 sp in reverse...
enjoy your ride...spring is upon us!

I do believe if you would have described the sound as a whine instead of a squeal, you probably would have got that same answer from a lot of us on this forum. I first heard that on my previous bike (2010 Ultra) and was a little concerned until I found out the reason. My 2011 does the same thing. Only real noticeable while in 1st when backing off of the throttle. ;)

rap 47,
You are prob. right, but to me it sounded like a break squeal, but my hearing is about as bad as it gets,... anyway, I feel a lot better about the squeal/whine :D now that I have heard from some of you, thank you all for your time ;).

Yup, exactly the same thing - it was driving me crazy when I was doing my original parking lot training - it's still driving me crazy almost 2 years later but I guess it's not hurting anything other than my ears (so I got some ear plugs)

10 mph in residential area? Don't know many that ever do 10 mph anywhere, unless in a parade! Squeal and whine are two different sounds....glad we got that clarified.:clapping:
